Canyoneering Basics - What to Expect

Canyoneering (also called canyoning) involves exploring canyons using ropes and a variety of techniques that may include hiking, scrambling, rappelling, climbing, jumping, and swimming.  It provides the opportunity to explore places that are out of reach for hikers, and may be much more beautiful.  A beginner to canyoneering will benefits from a guided trip to learn the technical rappelling and rope skills necessary for most canyons.

Canyoneering in the U.S.

Canyoneering is an exciting way to explore the natural beauty of canyons and is popular in various regions across the United States, particularly in the Southwest. Some of the best places for canyoneering in the US include the slot canyons near Moab, Utah, Zion National Park in Utah, the San Rafael Swell and Hanksville in Utah, and the canyons of Arizona.

What to Wear Canyoneering

For guided trips, you don't need to worry about ropes or gear - your guide will have it all! In summer, you can wear similar clothing canyoneering as you would on a hiking adventure. Bring along a pack with sunscreen, snacks, a quick drying long sleeve shirt, food/snacks and camera. During the cooler months, it’s highly recommended to wear waders and/or a wetsuit for many canyoneering routes. Being wet and cold is a dangerous combination. Your guide will help you determine whether this is necessary.

You definitely need sturdy shoes – a big part of canyoneering is hiking and rock scrambling. As always, bring sun protection like a sun hat and sunscreen if you’re going to be in an exposed area. What you need will depend on what route you take, so consult local outfitters about what you should wear.
