Description

Eye of the Needle® Canyoneering and Via Ferrata Tour – Zion Area

This is the one people talk about afterward. The Eye of the Needle® is a rarely visited slot canyon on private land just outside Zion National Park. It's a place that only a limited number of guests access each day, guided by a team that designed and built the experience from the ground up. There is nothing else quite like it in Southern Utah.

The canyon descends roughly 450 feet (137 m) over a quarter mile, with 9–10 rappels, including a dramatic 400-foot (122 m) waterfall. The route takes you through downclimbs, narrow passages, and a series of technical rappels before depositing you at the confluence of Oak Creek Canyon, where the terrain opens and the scale of the day begins to register. Then, rather than hiking back the way you came, the adventure shifts entirely. You gear up for a via ferrata ascent, climbing back out of the canyon via a fixed cable system, ladders, and protection anchored directly into the cliff, gaining elevation and perspective with every move.

Via ferrata, Italian for "iron path," was originally developed in the European Alps and made famous during World War I. Today these routes draw adventurers across Europe, but only a handful exist in the United States. This is one of them—purpose-built, locally designed, and utterly unlike anything in the area. The exposure is significant, the views are striking, and the sense of accomplishment at the top is the kind that stays with you.

This is a demanding, full-day experience for adventurers who are comfortable with exposure and technical terrain, or who are confident they can acquire these skills quickly under expert guidance. It is not an introductory trip—but it doesn't require a canyoneering résumé either. What it requires is physical capability, a willingness to push yourself, and a genuine sense of adventure.

Duration

  • Approximately 8–10+ hours

FAQs

Do I need prior canyoneering experience?

Prior experience with rappelling and rope handling is strongly recommended. This is not a beginner tour—the technical and physical demands are significant, and the canyon requires a high level of efficiency and personal responsibility for safety. That said, guides will provide instruction; if you're a fast learner who is physically capable and genuinely comfortable with exposure, you may be a good candidate.

What is a via ferrata?

Via ferrata (Italian for "iron path") is a protected climbing route using fixed cables, iron rungs, and ladders bolted into the cliff face. It allows you to ascend steep, dramatic terrain without the technical rope work of traditional climbing. This via ferrata was custom-designed and built specifically for this experience—one of only a handful in the entire United States.

What makes the Eye of the Needle® different from other slot canyon tours?

The Eye of the Needle® is a specific, named canyon on private land with a fixed and dramatic route—9–10 rappels including a 400-foot waterfall, followed by a via ferrata ascent. It's a much more demanding and technically complex experience than the other beginner-friendly slot canyon tours, and combines two distinct disciplines in a single day. The Eye of the Needle® is a defined adventure for those ready to go deeper.

Will we be in water?

Yes. The canyon contains cold, flowing water in some conditions, and guests should be prepared to get wet and cold. Appropriate cold water protection is provided based on the season.

When is this tour available?

Typically June through October, depending on road access and weather. Monsoon season (July–September) may occasionally require itinerary changes for safety.

Cancellation Policy

Full payment is due at the time of booking. Cancellations more than 3 days in advance will receive a full refund. Cancellations within 72 hours of trip start time are non-refundable.
