Description
Beginner Canyoneering Course Near Zion National Park
Descend a beautiful slot canyon and build the core skills you need to explore Zion’s iconic canyon country — independently. This one-day course from Zion Adventure Company is designed specifically around the unique reality of Zion National Park: because park policy does not permit guides in the backcountry, this course equips you with the knowledge, technique, and equipment access to make a safe self-guided descent on your own schedule.
Traveling through narrow slot canyons is humbling and exhilarating in equal measure. The terrain demands a blend of physical skill — scrambling, down-climbing, stemming, rappelling, rope handling — and mental sharpness: route-finding, problem-solving, and teamwork. Over the course of 8–10 hours, you’ll move from ground school at the Zion Adventure Company office to hands-on practice inside a nearby slot canyon, building real confidence in real terrain.
Your first two hours are spent at the Zion Adventure Company office, receiving instruction on foundational skills. From there, you’ll transition to a nearby slot canyon to practice everything in the field. Instructors follow a comprehensive curriculum but adapt freely based on your group’s pace, interests, and goals.
Upon successful completion, you’ll be eligible to rent full technical gear — ropes, harnesses, helmets, gear sets, cold water protection, backpacks, and drybags — for a self-guided canyon descent the following day.
Zion’s canyons each require a permit, which can be obtained online in advance or in person at the Zion Wilderness Desk the day before your intended descent.
