Description
Poison Springs Canyons – Guided Hanksville Canyoneering
We begin at the top of these canyons, but as we look out from the car park no canyons are in sight – nothing but endless rolling desert in every direction with a distant view of the Henry Mountains. After hiking in a seemingly random direction away from the vehicle, our canyon slowly comes into view below us. The flat world surrounding us begins to yield a minor drainage. After a rappel or two, it becomes apparent that the Poison Springs canyon system holds some of the deepest canyons around.
Admiring the smooth water-polished walls, we continue downstream negotiating a few small downclimbs along the way. Depending on our chosen route, we may encounter a few more rappels or simply use a rope as a handline and practice our teamwork skills as we help each other navigate each drop.
Soon the canyon opens back up and we must make our way back up to the vehicle. Hiking up and over ancient sand dunes, we have a chance to look down into the canyon we’ve just spent the day descending.
These canyons are some of our favorites to guide. They’re packed full of fun and the views of the Utah desert don’t get any better.

FAQs
What makes Poison Springs different from the Irish Canyons?
Poison Springs tends to feel deeper, darker, and more vertical. While both areas feature narrow slots, these canyons often include bigger rappels and more dramatic depth, giving the experience a more committing and adventurous feel.
How big are the rappels?
It depends on the route, but rappels can range from moderate drops to large, dramatic descents up to 200 feet. Your guide will choose a route that matches your comfort level.
Is this a good trip for beginners?
Adventurous beginners are welcome, especially those with a good level of fitness and a willingness to try something new. The day can be tailored, but it is still a full and physically engaging experience.
How tight do the canyons get?
There are sections where you’ll need to turn sideways, shimmy, or squeeze through narrow passages. These tight corridors are a defining part of the experience.
Will I get wet?
Possibly. Some routes include pools or sections where wading is required, especially after recent storms. It is best to come prepared for at least some water exposure.
Is this a good option if I want a remote experience?
Yes. These canyons are less frequently visited and offer a strong sense of solitude. It is common to spend the entire day without encountering other groups.
How physically demanding is this trip?
Expect a full-body workout. You’ll be climbing, squeezing, balancing, and problem-solving your way through the canyon. It is more dynamic than a typical hike.

Late Arrivals: Although our tours are private, and we will accommodate late arrivals as we can, occasionally a late arrival can cause tours later in the day and/or shuttle logistics to be affected. Because of this, we reserve the right to cancel your tour if you arrive more than 30 minutes after your scheduled reservation time. If a tour is canceled because of a late arrival, a refund will not be issued.
Weather: Full refunds are given if your guide cancels your trip due to bad weather. Our guides will make the final "go/no go" decision based on the safety of your group. If you decide to cancel because of uncomfortable weather, our standard cancellation policy will apply.
