Snowshoeing for Beginners

Snowshoeing is a great way to get out an enjoy the winter season.  Snowshoeing is easy – if you can walk, you can snowshoe – so it’s a great activity for beginners and people of all ages.  Depending on your pace, it can also burn a ton of calories, so it can be a great workout.   Snowshoeing allows people to get outdoors and embrace the snow, get a workout and provides opportunities to spot wildlife.

Our Snowshoeing Guide for Beginners will cover the basics of snowshoeing, the fun factor, how it compares to hiking, its benefits, difficulty level, calorie burning, how it stacks up against cross country skiing, and even tips for snowshoeing with your furry friends.

Snowshoeing Essentials - What to Wear Guide

In our What to Wear Snowshoeing Guide, we’ll help you with clothing, footwear, snowshoes, poles, accessories and other must-have gear recommendations.

Where to Snowshoe

Many magnificent hiking trails turn into snowshoe trails in the winter when they are snow covered.  You can pretty much snowshoe anywhere there is a decent amount of snow.  If the snow is hard packed, it may be fine to hike on without snowshoes, but deeper snow or a more recent snowfall can require snowshoes.

For your first time, or if you don't own snowshoes, they are easy to rent from local outfitters.  Many activity providers also provided guided snowshoe tours and treks to see some of the hidden gems of their area.
