FAQs

What wildlife may we encounter?

Wildlife is abundant in Northern Yellowstone in the Winter. On your journey to the trailhead, and throughout the day, you may see some of North America’s largest mammals living free and wild as they have for millennia. Herbivores such as Bison, Elk, Deer, Moose and Sheep, range openly throughout valleys, gorges and cliff-sides. Many great raptors stay through the winter as well; Bald and Golden Eagles, Falcons and Hawks perch on trees or circle the skies searching for their next meal. Predators like Wolves, Coyotes and Foxes are exciting to observe as winter is their time of hunting during the day.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes. Include your dietary restrictions at checkout. It's important that we have a list of any food allergies and dietary restrictions for your group. Please be sure to list any food allergies that may result in anaphylaxis. We cannot guarantee allergen-free meals.

Can you snowshoe in Yellowstone?

Absolutely! Yellowstone is a vast winter wonderland, and snowshoeing is one of the best ways to explore it. The park has designated trails for winter hiking, and your guide will select the ideal route based on your skill level, interests, current weather, and road conditions.

Is snowshoeing in Yellowstone a good experience?

Yes! Snowshoeing offers a more immersive way to experience Yellowstone compared to exploring by car. You’ll venture off-road into areas of the park that are inaccessible by vehicle, while your guide provides insights into local wildlife, plant life, and winter habitats. Moving at a slower pace allows you to connect with the landscape in a meaningful way—truly becoming part of the park, even if just for a day.

Is snowshoeing more difficult than hiking in Yellowstone?

It may feel a little unusual at first, especially if you’re new to snowshoeing. Once you get the rhythm, snowshoes make moving across deep snow easier than walking normally, giving you access to beautiful, quiet areas of Yellowstone that most visitors never see. It’s a gentle, human-powered way to explore the winter backcountry.

Do I need a reservation for a Yellowstone snowshoe tour?

Yes, reservations are required for all of our safari tours. This allows us to provide properly fitted snowshoes and poles, and to match the route to your preferred activity level. Your confirmation email will include everything you need to bring, as well as what we provide during the tour. If you have additional questions before your trip, our friendly office staff is available by phone to assist.

Can I bring a baby or child on a private snowshoe tour?

Yes, children can join our tours, but they must be safely secured in an appropriate winter-rated carrier. Parents should bring a backpack-style child carrier designed for snowshoeing or winter hiking, with proper insulation and harnesses to keep your child safe and warm. The carrier must be compatible with your snowshoes and allow you to maintain balance and control while walking.

Keep in mind that winter weather can be unpredictable, so dressing your child in multiple warm layers, waterproof outerwear, and insulated gloves, hat, and boots is essential. Our guides can provide additional tips for keeping children comfortable and safe on the trail.
