Where to Go Kayaking in Key West
Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary
A protected marine area that encompasses over 3,800 square miles (9,800 square km) of waters surrounding the Florida Keys, stretching from south of Miami to the Dry Tortugas. Established in 1990, the sanctuary protects one of the most diverse and extensive coral reef ecosystems in North America, including the world’s third-largest barrier reef, as well as seagrass beds, mangrove islands, shipwrecks, and a variety of marine habitats.
Sugarloaf Key
A large island located in the Lower Florida Keys about 17 miles (27 km) north of Key West. A less popular area, this is great to see the mangroves with clear and calm waters perfect for beginner kayakers.
Key West National Wildlife Refuge
Known as the Conchs or Backcountry to locals, was among the first refuges established in North America and is one of the last remaining examples of an untouched marine ecosystem in Florida. Accessible only by boat, this 14 island, 375 mile (603 km) stretch of open water is home to hundreds of bird species, several turtle species (hawksbill, loggerhead, green), the Florida manatee, Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphins, and the Miami blue butterfly (critically endangered).
The Lakes - Key West National Wildlife Refuge
Part of the Key West National Wildlife Refuge consists of shallow saltwater lagoons and flats between sandbars and mangrove islands. It is great for kayaking due to its calm and protected waters. It is also home to about 70 percent of juvenile finfish, offering the opportunity to see rays and small sharks.

Is kayaking hard for beginners?
Kayaking is a great activity for beginners. It's relatively easy to learn, and can be done in a variety of waterways, from lakes to rivers and even oceans. We do recommend that beginners take a lesson to learn paddling techniques and water safety tips. Most kayak rental shops will provide a basic beginner lesson when renting kayaks to beginners.
Is a kayak easy to flip?
Kayaks do not usually flip easily, and a flip is typically caused by a loss of balance (e.g. getting into or out of the kayak), choppy water conditions or strong wind.
