Description
Half Day Key West Sailing, Snorkeling & Kayaking Excursion
Start your day with an adventure that has it all. This 4.5-hour morning excursion takes you aboard a classic shallow-draft schooner into the pristine backcountry waters of the Key West National Wildlife Refuge — one of the last untouched marine ecosystems in Florida. Accessible only by boat, this remote wilderness is a world away from the crowds of Old Town Key West.
Set sail from the historic waterfront in Old Town and let the crew do the navigating while you settle in on deck. Once you reach the Backcountry, kayak through mangrove-shaded channels teeming with bird life, snorkel over living corals in crystal-clear water, or simply relax on deck and soak in the sweet Florida breeze. The schooner's shallow draft allows it to navigate through the winding channels, sandbars, and mangrove islands in ways that larger boats simply cannot — giving you access to some of the most postcard-perfect scenery in the Florida Keys.
New to snorkeling or kayaking? No problem. The experienced crew provides a quick instructional briefing before you hit the water, with one-on-one support available if you need it. Snorkeling gear is sanitized between uses, and the easy-handling ocean kayaks are suitable for all ability levels. If you'd prefer to stay on deck, you're more than welcome to enjoy the scenery from the boat.
The Key West National Wildlife Refuge — known to locals as the Backcountry — is a 14-island, 375-mile stretch of open water that serves as habitat for hundreds of bird species, hawksbill, loggerhead, and green sea turtles, Florida manatees, Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, and the critically endangered Miami blue butterfly. The crew takes great pride in educating guests about the area and in treating the ecosystem with the utmost respect.
Groups are limited to 20 guests, keeping the experience intimate and unhurried. Snacks and beverages are included — fresh fruit, chips and salsa, hummus, soft drinks, wine, beer, and water — so all you need to do is show up and enjoy.

Wildlife Guidelines
Please be respectful of the fact that coral is a living organism and any standing, touching, or knocking over will irreparably damage the organism that takes a very long time to grow and is essential to our marine reefs. Please also be respectful of any marine animals including but not limited to turtles, rays, sharks, seals, and dolphins. Please never chase, harass, feed, or TOUCH any of the marine species. Enjoy their company if they approach from a distance and calmly move away from them if in their path.
To protect manatees and support responsible ecotourism, the crew follows strict wildlife viewing practices. Guests are asked to observe passively — no touching, chasing, or approaching manatees. We encourage the "Freeze and Float" method: stay still in the water, keep your hands to yourself, and let the manatees decide if they want to come closer. Manatees are naturally curious and may choose to swim near you — a truly special experience — but all interactions must happen on the manatee's terms.

FAQs
What marine life can I expect to see on this tour?
The Key West National Wildlife Refuge (Backcountry) is home to an incredible variety of wildlife. In and around the mangroves and coral areas, guests commonly encounter hundreds of bird species, hawksbill, loggerhead, and green sea turtles, and the critically endangered Miami blue butterfly. Dolphins are frequently spotted during the sail — the crew loves them as much as guests do, though they swim where they please! Florida manatees are also present in the area.
When is the best time of year to snorkel in Key West?
Key West enjoys warm water year-round, with water temperatures ranging from around 70°F (21°C) in winter to 85°F (29°C) in summer. Visibility and conditions can vary, but the Backcountry's calm, protected waters make it suitable for snorkeling in all seasons. Wetsuits are provided complimentarily in the cooler winter months.
I've never snorkeled or kayaked before — can I still join?
Absolutely. No prior experience is needed. The crew provides a thorough instructional briefing before everyone enters the water, with one-on-one support available for those who need extra guidance. The kayaks are easy-handling ocean models, and the water in the Backcountry is warm and shallow. If you'd rather stay on the boat and enjoy the scenery, that's perfectly welcome too.
Is there a weight limit for kayaking?
Yes. The tandem kayaks have a combined weight limit of 500 lbs (227 kg). Guests should feel comfortable with some level of physical activity, including getting in and out of the kayak from the boat. The crew is on hand to assist with loading. If you have specific questions, contact the reservations team before booking.
Does everyone snorkel and kayak at the same time?
Smaller groups and families explore together. For larger groups, the crew may divide into two smaller groups to ensure the best experience for everyone.
What are the rules for snorkeling near the reefs?
The crew takes environmental stewardship seriously. Touching or standing on coral — living or dead — is strictly prohibited, as is removing, harvesting, or possessing any marine life. Guests are asked to observe all wildlife from a respectful distance.
Can I snorkel if I don't want to kayak (or vice versa)?
Yes — snorkeling and kayaking are both offered on this tour, but participation in each is entirely up to you. You're always welcome to relax on deck and enjoy the scenery.
What is the group size limit?
This tour is limited to a maximum of 20 guests, keeping the experience small and personal.
Is there shade on the boat?
Yes. The sails naturally provide plenty of shade on deck. In summer months or on low-wind days, a canopy can be added for additional coverage.
What food and drinks are included?
Morning and afternoon Sail, Snorkel & Kayak tours include snacks and beverages: fresh fruit, chips and salsa, hummus, wine, beer, soft drinks, and water. Alcohol is served after watersports.
Is there a fresh water rinse on board?
Yes — you're welcome to rinse off in fresh water after snorkeling and kayaking.
Are the boats accessible for people with disabilities or wheelchair users?
The fleet consists of historic schooner replicas, which have some accessibility limitations. Contact the team directly to discuss your individual needs — every effort will be made to accommodate you.
Is this trip suitable for pregnant guests?
Yes, guests who are pregnant are welcome on any tour. However, loading and unloading from kayaks can be physically demanding, so we encourage guests who are pregnant to consider their personal comfort and abilities when deciding whether to participate in kayaking and snorkeling.
Can we bring a cooler?
Yes — small coolers are welcome on board. No glassware, please.
Are there dietary accommodations?
If you have dietary restrictions or follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, please note it in the comments section when booking. The crew will do their best to provide suitable alternatives. Guests are also welcome to bring their own food on board.
Will I get seasick?
The crew intentionally seeks out calm, flat water — the goal is enjoyment, not speed, and seasickness is uncommon on these tours. The Key West departure point at the Danger Chandlery Store is particularly sheltered, with almost always flat-calm conditions. If you are prone to motion sickness, take medication at least 30 minutes before boarding. Motion sickness pills and sea bands are available at the Danger Chandlery Store; ginger candy can also help.
Can I snorkel or kayak with a beard or mustache?
You can snorkel with a beard or mustache, but facial hair can prevent a tight mask seal, allowing water to leak in. It is often recommended to shave at least your mustache before snorkeling. If you'd prefer not to shave, apply petroleum jelly or chapstick to your mustache to help create a seal.
Can I wear glasses or contacts while snorkeling?
You cannot wear glasses with a snorkel mask, but contacts are a great option for seeing clearly underwater. If you have a prescription mask, feel free to bring it — the outfitter does have some prescription masks available on board, though selection may be limited. Note that everything appears approximately 25% larger and closer underwater, which helps visibility even without correction.
What are some snorkeling safety tips?
TripOutside recommends knowing how to swim before snorkeling, but participation is ultimately up to you and the tour operator's discretion.
- Never snorkel alone — stay with your group and crew
- Test your gear and make sure your mask fits before entering the water
- Breathe calmly, relax, and avoid overexertion
- Know your limits — if you feel tired or anxious, it's okay to return to the boat
- Stay aware of your surroundings and follow all crew instructions
