Top 9 La Ventana Kiteboarding Schools for Lessons

Read our review of the Best Kiteboarding Schools in La Ventana article for an in-depth review of the kite and wing schools.

Kiteboarding in La Ventana is a unique and thrilling experience. La Ventana is a popular kiteboarding destination located on the Sea of Cortez in Baja California Sur, Mexico. It's known for its steady winds, warm water, and beautiful scenery.

The wind conditions in La Ventana are typically best from November through March, with wind speeds ranging from 15 to 25 knots. The water is relatively calm, with small waves and a sandy bottom, making it an ideal spot for beginners and intermediate riders. The water temperature is generally warm, ranging from the high 60s to the low 80s. Although the temps are warm, a wetsuit is still recommended because the wind can make it feel chilly while you're out of the water.

La Ventana has a laid-back atmosphere and a small-town feel, with several kiteboarding schools and shops available. It's a great place to meet other kiteboarders and immerse yourself in the kiteboarding community.

Overall, kiteboarding in La Ventana is a great experience for anyone who loves the sport or wants to learn. The combination of warm water, steady winds, and beautiful scenery make it a memorable destination for any kiteboarder.

La Ventana Kiteboarding Schools

There are many different Kiteboarding Schools in La Ventana, we spent 10 days in La Ventana, took lessons, and hand-selected a few different schools to feature on TripOutside. Here are some of the things that we looked for:

  • Instructor experience: how many years had they been teaching Kiteboarding? Everyone selected had over 10 years of teaching experience
  • Certifications: We selected schools that taught using the IKO teaching method or at least have 10-plus years of teaching using their own method. We asked them about their safety records and progression methods for teaching beginners.
  • Vibe: We wanted to make sure that the Kiteboarding instructors and schools in La Ventana were friendly, and patient and took the time to explain the processes to the students.
  • Location: Most of the La Ventana schools that we selected are either on the water or very close to the water to ensure that you maximize the lesson time. For the schools that are not on the water, the lesson time does not start until you leave the shop.
  • Reviews and ratings: We only featured kiteboarding schools that have over 4.5 stars in ratings on Google and Tripadvisor.

La Ventana Kiteboarding Lessons Cost

Kiteboarding lessons are priced by the hour. Most kiteboarding lessons in La Ventana are priced by the hour and there are different packages that different schools offer. We did our best to simplify the pricing and here are our recommendations on how to think about lessons.

La Ventana kiteboarding lessons cost around $85-$100+/hour. The more hours that you purchase, the cheaper the rate gets.

  • If you want to commit to Kiteboarding and have the time to learn it on one trip, we recommend that you select the 'Zero to Hero' or typically selected as the 3-day course. This may not mean that you will get the lessons on back-to-back days or that you have to even take it over 3 days. Lessons greatly vary by your skill level, ability to catch on to the sport based on your previous experience, and wind and weather conditions for the day.

Here are some tips before taking a kiteboarding lesson in La Ventana:

  • Book the lessons as soon as you arrive or start early on in your trip. You may have 10 days in La Ventana on your vacation but you may end up only getting 3 days of good wind. This is unlikely but possible. We spent 2 days researching lessons and by the time we booked, we were only able to take 2 days of lessons because the wind dropped and rain came in. Our recommendation is to book the lesson early, and learn as soon as you can so that you can get out there on your own and start kiteboarding in La Ventana!
  • Show up to the lesson prepared and ready to go!
    • We didn't realize how long it takes to put on your wetsuit etc. We highly recommend having your wetsuit on and ready by the time your lesson starts. There is a lot to learn and take in and it's best to be prepared in advance.
  • If you have the time, watch some Youtube videos (we found this channel to be the most helpful) or take lessons on Duotone's Kiteboarding App

Reasons to take a kiteboarding lesson in La Ventana

La Ventana is one of the best places to learn Kiteboarding or Kitesurfing for many different reasons. The season is long, there are a lot of kiteboarding schools and instructors in La Ventana which makes it easy to find someone available to teach you while you're on vacation. With multiple school options, you can find an instructor or kiteboarding lessons near you. You can use TripOutside's map feature to find the closest school to you. Kiteboarding can be a challenging sport to learn as it combines the aspect of learning land conditions, obstacles on the beach, in the water, etc. It requires an understanding of wind and how it behaves at different positions, also known as the wind window. There are safety precautions to take that can be hard to learn online like tying the line knots to the kite properly and how the different knots impact the kite.

There are also so many safety instructions that are important to know, not only for your own safety but for the safety of other kiters and beachgoers. If you learn it the right way to start, you'll get to having fun sooner! For example, it's really important to know how to body drag, the act of using the kite to drag your body in different directions in the water to get back to your board. You'll inevitably fall while you're learning, getting back to your board using body dragging allows you to get back to your board quickly so that you can restart and enjoy kiteboarding more and struggling less :)

In order to learn this sport safely and maximize the fun, we highly recommend taking Kiteboarding Lessons.

How to pick a kiteboarding school in La Ventana?

There are so many kiteboarding schools in La Ventana that it is a bit overwhelming to decide who to go with! Overall, here is the criteria that TripOutside used to select the schools that we feature on TripOutside:

  • Are they IKO certified? IKO is an international kiteboarding educational system that certifies instructors on a very specific teaching method based on safety and learning methods. This is not a requirement to be a kiteboarding school or instructor. We did our best to select the IKO-certified schools or schools that have IKO-certified instructors.
  • How long have the instructors and schools been teaching kiteboarding?
  • Where are they located? Are they close to your hotel or accommodation? Do you have to drive a far distance to get to them? Are they right on the beach where you take lessons? Consider using TripOutside's map feature to find the closest kiteboarding school near you.
  • Ratings and reviews: spend some time reading Google or Tripadvisor reviews of the schools.
  • Get a recommendation! We asked our friends and locals on their opinions of the best kiteboarding schools in La Ventana

What will I learn in a kiteboarding lesson?

Here are some of the basics that you'll learn during your kiteboarding lessons that most schools will cover, regardless of their teaching method:

You'll start off with a land lesson:

  • How to set up the kite (unfold, inflate, tie up, attach safety leash, attach the harness, wear the harness).
  • How to assess the area near you for safety, wind, and land knowledge.
  • Understanding the wind window.
  • Understanding the basics of kite maneuvering. What powers the kite, depowers it, how to keep it from crashing, etc.
  • Learning to fly the kite with one hand.
  • Kiteboarding etiquette and kiteboarder's priority on the beach and in the water.

Get in the water:

  • You will then learn to maneuver the kite in the water and learn how to body drag. Body dragging teaches you how to use the kite in the water without a board to drag your body in different directions.
  • Changing directions in the water. How to switch directions of the kite to head in different directions.
  • Learning to fly the kite with one hand in the water.
  • Safety measures to self-rescue if the kite crashes and you can't get it untangled.

Water + Board

  • Finally, you will learn how to do all of the above skills while learning to get up on the kiteboard. Putting all of these skills together will help you become an independent kiter that can launch your kite, land your kite and safely come in and out of the water.
  • Depending on your skill level and how you're progressing, the next step is to learn to go upwind in the water using your board, body positioning, and the kite. This allows you to start and end at the same location instead of always kiteboarding downwind.
