Durango Kayaking - What to Know

Durango kayaking offers a rad mix of adventure, scenery, and accessibility, making it one of the top ways to get on the water in southwest Colorado. Whether you're looking to float a mellow stretch of the Animas River or paddle around a peaceful alpine lake, kayaking in Durango gives you a front-row seat to the region's natural beauty. It's also a great way to cool off in the summer and see the landscape from a whole new perspective—all while getting in some solid upper-body work.

Where to Kayak around Durango

River Trips – Lower Animas River

Our popular inflatable kayak tours run 2.5 hours down the Lower Animas. You’ll hit Class II–III rapids, float past snow-capped peaks and wildlife, and land back in town. Great for beginners or anyone chasing a guided adventure.

For a gentler river day, there's a stretch of calm water where paddlers can easily paddle up and back. You start from Oxbow Park, paddle up river and float back down to the starting point without needing a shuttle.

Lake Nighthorse

Just 15 minutes outside town, this calm reservoir is ideal for flatwater kayaking. Kayak rentals (and paddle boards!) are available from Four Corners River Sports. Paddle under soaring cliffs, watch wildlife, or just float at your own pace. You can rent kayaks and SUPs as a first come first serve basis on Lake Nighthorse. No rapids, no stress—just beautiful views, clear water, and wide-open space to explore.

Lake Electra

Roughly 15 minutes from downtown, Lake Electra fills with morning light. Look out for our paddleboarding tours, or rent a board or kayak and chill under the pines.

Lake Haviland

A quieter option—about 20 minutes south. No rentals available, so bring your own and enjoy wide-open waters and solitude.

Molas Lake (11,000 ft)

Swap desert vibes for a high alpine backdrop. Rentals are available lakeside, though walk-ins only—no online booking. Come early on busy days!

Lemon Reservoir

Another beautiful, boat-accessible lake that requires your own kayak. It's ideal for sunset paddles and wildlife watching, with fewer paddlers on the water.

Vallecito Lake

A bit further out, Vallecito offers a more remote feel with forested shores and mountain backdrops. Great for a full-day outing or combining with other adventures.

Tours & Lessons on the Animas

  • Guided Inflatable Kayak Trip – 2.5 hours of fun Class II–III rapids with a pro guide.
  • Whitewater Kayak Lessons – Upskill your paddling with expert instruction; frequently combined with guided tours.
  • Self-Guided Rentals – Through Four Corners River Sports, choose from sea kayaks, inflatables, or paddleboards.

Top Tips for Kayaking in Durango

  • Layer up smart – Dress for variable temps and splash from river or reservoir.
  • Protect your feet – Use secure water shoes (no flip-flops).
  • Reserve early – River tours and lake rentals book fast in summer—reserve online.
  • Bring lunch – Especially for lake trips or lesson days.
  • Start early – Mornings offer better light and fewer crowds across lakes.
  • Water safety – At altitude (especially Molas Lake), stay hydrated and take breaks.
  • Check the flow - If you're kayaking the Animas, be sure to check current water levels. High water = more thrills, but also more risk.
  • Wear a PFD - Even in calm water, always wear a properly fitted life jacket.
  • Dress for the water, not the air - Mountain water stays cold even on hot days. A wetsuit or quick-dry layers are a smart move.
  • Protect your stuff - Bring a dry bag if you’re carrying snacks, phones, or keys. Or leave the valuables on shore.
  • Book in advance - Summer gets busy in Durango. If you need gear or want to go on a tour, it’s smart to lock in your spot early.

Other Adventures in Durango

  • Mountain Biking – From in-town singletrack to high alpine shuttles, pedal Durango’s peaks.
  • Rafting – Float the Animas with family or conquer Big/Thunder Rapids outside town.
  • Hiking in the magical San Juans or to waterfalls on Falls Creek trail
  • Paddleboarding at Lake Nighthorse, Electra Lake or on the Animas River
  • Climbing and bouldering in nearby sandstone and granite zones
  • Backpacking the Colorado Trail or Weminuche Wilderness

This town is all about choosing your own adventure—on dirt, water, or rock.
