FAQs
What is the difference between the ¼ day and ½ day inflatable kayak trips?
Both trips feature the same exciting Class II and III rapids like Smelter, Sawmill, Santa Rita, and Pinball, but the main difference is time on the water:
- ¼ Day Trip: About 1.5 hours on the river – a quick, high-energy adventure perfect for beginners or those short on time.
- ½ Day Trip: About 3.5 hours on the river – more time to practice paddling, enjoy scenic stretches, and includes a mid-trip snack and drink.
Do I need prior kayaking experience?
No prior experience is necessary! Our inflatable kayaks are stable and beginner-friendly. Your guide will provide a safety briefing and paddling instruction before launching and support you throughout the trip.
Are inflatable kayaks harder than rafting?
Inflatable kayaking is a step up in adventure compared to rafting since you’ll be paddling your own craft. You’ll get closer to the water, feel more independent, and experience the rapids more directly, but your guide will be there to help every step of the way.
Is this trip suitable for kids?
Yes, older kids (ages 12+) and teens who are confident swimmers will love inflatable kayaking.
When is the best time to go inflatable kayaking in Durango?
The Animas River is great for inflatable kayaking late spring through early fall. Early summer offers higher water and bigger waves, while late summer provides a more relaxed float with plenty of sunshine.
What class of rapids are on the lower Animas River?
You’ll paddle through Class II and III rapids, which are ideal for anyone looking for fun and excitement without extreme difficulty. Rapids include Smelter, Sawmill, Santa Rita, and Ponderosa.
How far in advance do I need to make a reservation?
We recommend planning your trip as far in advance as possible. Without a reservation, we can’t guarantee that we will have the capacity to accommodate your group same-day due to guide and equipment availability.
