Expert guides lead even the most novice of beginners down the 4-7 miles of river, ensuring a safe experience for all. Whether you're a first-timer or an experienced paddler, this river trip offers a fun and exciting way to explore the river while maneuvering through its gentle rapids and calm stretches.
Your guided trip starts with a brief safety orientation and paddling lesson, ensuring that you feel confident in your inflatable kayak before hitting the water. Once you’re on the river, you’ll navigate fun, spashy rapids and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the San Juan Mountains.
The Lower Animas River offers a perfect mix of Class II-III rapids, providing just the right amount of excitement for inflatable kayaks. This 2.5-hour trip will give you plenty of time on the water to paddle through rapids as well as calm spots. You will have an experienced guide on the water with you.

What to Bring / Wear

  • Sturdy shoes - All guests must wear shoes that strap to their feet such as old tennis shoes, Chacos, or Tevas. Flip-flops and slip-on shoes are not permitted.  If you don’t have the right shoes, river booties can be rented from our location for your convenience.
  • Quick-dry clothing - You will be getting wet so wear clothing that dries fast such as swimsuits or workout clothing. Avoid cotton and denim.  Cheap sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen are encouraged.
  • Change of clothes and towel for after your trip
  • Sunscreen and water are highly encouraged
  • You may bring Go-Pros or other waterproof devices. 
  • Avoid bringing your phone, electronic key fobs, wallets, or anything else that cannot get wet, lost, or broken on the raft.

FAQs

What should I wear on the Animas River kayaking trip?

Lightweight, quick dry clothing is recommended. Please avoid cotton and denim clothing. Cheap sunglasses, hat, and sun shirt are also prudent to protect from the high elevation sun.

What about inclement weather?

We go rafting in all weather, rain or shine. If the weather looks rainy, bring a rain jacket. We will have fun no matter what the weather does. We also rent out splash gear in case you forgot your rain jacket at home. If you wish to cancel your trip you must call us at least 72 hours prior to your trip in order to avoid paying full charges (see our cancellation policy below).

What is the parking situation at Durango Rivertrippers?

Guests will park at the office lot and be driven to the river put in. There is ample parking near our facility and even parking for larger vehicles like RVs.

Does kayaking on the Animas River require previous experience?

Beginners are welcome, as long as participants are physically fit enough to paddle and steer!

What are the age requirements to take the Animas kayaking trip?

The age requirement for the Animas River kayaking trip is 14+ 

Where do you meet for this kayaking trip?

You'll meet at 360 S. Camino Del Rio, Durango Co, 81301 and the guides will transfer you to the start of the river trip.

What does trip insurance include?

By adding the trip insurance option, your whole group can get trip protection that allows you to cancel any time 12 hours BEFORE your trip launch date and get a full refund in the form of a non-expiring gift card. If canceled within 12 hours of your launch date no refund or gift card will be given.

Where do we leave our belongings when we're on the river?

Our kayaks have NO storage; please leave any large items in your hotel room or car. Small items (such as wallets, keys, and phones) can be placed in a complimentary locker.

I have my own life jacket. Can I wear it on the trip?

Sorry, no personal PFDs are allowed due to permitting and insurance regulations.

What kind of wildlife might we see?

The lower Animas River is home to a variety of notable wildlife. Commonly seen animals include bald eagles, ospreys, great blue herons, mule deer, beavers, and river otters. The river is also inhabited by brown trout, rainbow trout, and cutthroat trout.

Do you kayak when it's raining?
