Durango Paddle Boarding
Durango Paddleboarding - What to Know
Paddleboarding in Durango is a laid-back, scenic way to explore Southwest Colorado’s high-desert landscapes and mountain views. The most popular spot for SUP in town is the Animas River, where several mellow stretches are ideal for beginners and families, and faster-moving sections offer a bit of a thrill for more experienced paddlers. If you’re new to SUP or just want to chill, head to the Oxbow put-in where the water is calmer and there are more spots to hop off, swim, or just float along. Be sure to check current river conditions—flows can change with snowmelt and rain.
Not into river paddling? No worries—just outside Durango, Haviland Lake and Lake Nighthorse offer peaceful flatwater paddleboarding with big alpine views. You’ll get that mountain lake vibe, without the current. Rentals and guided SUP tours include all the gear you need—board, paddle, PFD, and even dry bags if you’re bringing snacks or gear.
Top Places to Paddle Board Near Durango
Lake Nighthorse
Only minutes from downtown, this is the go-to spot for SUP in Durango. The calm water is perfect for first-timers or anyone wanting a peaceful float. You can rent paddle boards on-site through Four Corners River Sports—just show up ready to glide.
Lake Electra
A favorite for locals and a rad place for paddle board tours. Surrounded by tall pines and mellow waters, this lake feels like a postcard. We offer guided paddle board tours here—perfect for groups or anyone wanting a little beta from local guides.
Molas Lake (11,000 ft)
Want some serious high-elevation stoke? Molas Lake is up in the San Juans, with dramatic views and clear, chilly waters. There are board rentals available right at the lake, but it’s walk-up only, no reservations—so get there early!
Lake Haviland
Just a short drive north, Haviland is a more remote and peaceful option. There are no rentals on-site, so bring your own paddle board. Pack a picnic, take it slow, and enjoy the quieter vibes.
Lemon Reservoir
Another great BYOB (bring your own board) lake. Big open water, fewer crowds, and a good spot to catch a sunset paddle after a day of adventuring.
Animas River
More experienced paddlers sometimes take to the flatwater sections of the Animas River. We'll add the exact stretch soon—great for those who want to try river paddling with less current and no rapids.

Can you paddleboard at Electra Lake in Durango?
Yes, you can. It's one of the most beautiful lakes to paddleboard near Durango. There is a $26 entrance fee per person and you want to save some time to have your paddleboards cleaned and inspected during entry. We recommend the half-day paddleboarding tour at Lake Electra that includes all gear, transportation and lunch.
Can you paddleboard on the Animas River?
Yes, you can. There are flat water sections north of Oxbow Park, and you can float a short paddle south as well before you hit rapids. Please note, river flows can vary greatl,y and this is not a recommendation to go paddle on your own if you are a beginner, as river paddleboarding requires a lot of planning and safety measures to know where to get in, get out, and how to not end up in the rapids. You can't get off the shore on the Animas River as it runs through private property. We recommend taking a guided trip on the Animas River where you local guide can bring your gear, transport you, and paddle with you for safety purposes.
