Durango SUP Tours - What to Expect

Durango SUP tours are an unforgettable way to explore the waterways of Southwest Colorado with a local guide leading the way. Whether you’re paddling the mellow stretches of the Animas River or heading out to scenic alpine lakes just outside of town, guided stand-up paddleboarding tours let you soak in the views, learn about local history and ecology, and improve your paddling skills—all while staying on your feet (or at least trying to!). Most tours are beginner-friendly and include all the gear you need, so you can just show up and send it. Durango SUP tours range from private, custom lake tours to relaxed group river floats, all guided by passionate, knowledgeable local outfitters who prioritize safety, fun, and Leave No Trace principles. You’ll be paddling in small groups or private sessions with all gear included—just show up with sun protection, water, and your adventurous spirit.

Where Durango Paddleboarding Tours Go

  • Mountain Lakes Lake: A stunning, little-known alpine lake at 8,400 feet with crystal-clear waters and mountain views. Available only by guided tour, thanks to outfitter permits and a strict gear-cleaning process. Bonus: cliff jumping, island lounging, and private picnics!
  • Animas River: A chill, 1.5-mile flatwater float through Durango’s north side. No rapids here—just slow-moving water, wide-open skies, and the ultimate relaxing SUP session. This one’s perfect for families or first-time paddlers.

Durango SUP Tour Types

  • Private SUP Tours – Tailored experiences on Electra Lake with flexible pacing, personalized instruction, and gourmet lunch included. Great for families, couples, or anyone wanting a custom adventure.
  • Mixed Group SUP Tours – Small group floats on the Animas River. Mellow and beginner-friendly, with all gear and instruction included. Choose from solo, small group, or large group pricing tiers.

When to Go Paddleboarding in Durango

Durango’s SUP season typically runs from late May through September, when the weather is warm and the mountain water is at its best. Morning tours are ideal for calmer wind conditions, but both lake and river tours are available throughout the day.

  • May – Early June: Snowmelt fills lakes and rivers. Expect chilly water but fewer crowds.
  • Mid-June – August: Prime season! Warm temps, long days, and great water clarity.
  • September: Fewer people and beautiful fall colors—an underrated time to paddle.

What’s Included in Your Tour

All Durango paddleboarding tours come with:

  • High-end paddleboards (can convertible to kayak mode)
  • High-end PFDs (life jackets) for all guests
  • Dry bags or daypacks for your gear
  • Snacks and/or picnic lunch (depending on the tour)
  • Transportation from Durango (pickup within 5 miles or on the way to the tour location)

What to Bring on Your Durango SUP Tour

  • Swimsuit or quick-dry athletic clothes
  • Sandals or water shoes (no flip-flops)
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, sunshirt
  • Refillable water bottle (1–2 liters recommended)
  • Rain jacket or layers (mountain weather can change quickly)
  • Optional: snacks, towel, change of clothes for post-tour

Top Tips for SUP Tours in Durango

  • Start on flatwater. If it’s your first time, the Animas River float is the perfect intro to paddleboarding—no rapids, just pure relaxation.
  • Go private for more flexibility. Want to cliff jump, swim, or take breaks? Electra Lake private tours are made for that.
  • Bring the kids or your pup. All tours are family- and dog-friendly—just check minimum age or safety rules in advance.
  • Don't be afraid to sit. Paddleboards convert to kayak-mode, and sitting down is a solid option—especially if you hit a headwind.
  • Ask your guide. Local guides are a wealth of info about SUP techniques, Durango’s history, wildlife, and the best trails and tacos in town.

Where do paddleboard tours go in Durango?

Durango has some incredible paddleboarding options from lakes that you can drive up to or hike in with an inflatable paddleboard. Lake Nighthorse, Haviland Lake, and Electra Lakes are beautiful mountain lakes where you can SUP by bringing your own board, renting a board from one of the local outfitters or by taking a guided tour. There are reservoirs further from town as well like Lemon Reservoir or Molas Lake. The Lake Electra Paddelboarding tour is our personal favorite paddling experience in Durango.
