Description

Active Animas River SUP Experience: Scenic Out & Back SUP Mixed Group Tour

Start strong and finish easy on this unique stand-up paddleboard tour that rewards your effort with an unforgettable float. You'll travel through a flatwater section of the Animas River just north of town—no rapids, just a mellow current and sweeping views. Paddling upstream gives you time to settle into your stroke, watch the landscape shift, and spot birds along the banks. Then, after a riverside rest, you’ll turn around and let the gentle flow carry you back to where you started.
The day begins with a pickup in town followed by a short drive to the river put-in. Your guide will outfit you with a paddleboard, PFD, and paddle, and provide a quick but comprehensive skills intro. You’ll learn how to paddle from a kneeling and standing position, how to remount if needed, and how to use kayak-mode for more efficient upstream travel. We’ll talk about pacing, taking breaks, and how to get the most out of this rhythmic paddle experience.
Expect about 1–1.5 hours of upstream effort with breaks in calm eddies before we take a mid-tour pause for snacks or a quick stretch. Then, it’s time to kick back and float—typically 30–45 minutes of easy gliding with big skies, reflective water, and quiet moments. Your guide will assist as needed and capture some photos of your hard-earned reward. This tour is only offered when the Animas is flowing gently—usually mid-summer into fall—and offers a unique way to experience both challenge and calm on the same beautiful stretch of water.

Duration

2-3 hours

Location / Where to Meet

We'll provide transportation to and from your lodging (within 5 miles of Durango’s city center). If you are staying farther outside of town we will establish a spot to meet and transport you from there, or we can meet at Oxbow Park. We'll be in touch in advance of the tour to establish a meeting point.
Restrooms and changing rooms are available at the put-in at Oxbow Park.
As this is a group tour, please recognize your guide will be making multiple stops to pick up and drop off other guests. Please be on time with your set pick-up time to avoid delaying the entire tour.

Ages & Requirements

  1. Minimum Age: 8 years old
  2. Swimming Ability Required: All participants must know how to swim and be able to swim up to 30 feet while wearing a PFD.
  3. Paddleboard Options: We offer child-size paddleboards for capable young paddlers and oversized boards for adult-child pairs.
  4. Group Suitability: Best for those comfortable with a moderate amount of physical activity. Previous paddleboarding experience is helpful but not required.
  5. Physical Requirements: Moderate upper body strength and cardiovascular ability are required for paddling upstream. SUPs can be converted to kayak-mode for added ease.
You need to have a moderate level of physical fitness to do this tour. You need to have the cardiovascular ability and physical strength to be rather consistently paddling for 1-1.5 hours, with little breaks along the way. Most guests find the tour to be a nice challenge to slowly work their way upstream.
We recommend that families or any party that requires a slower pace reserve a private tour, as the tour can be adjusted to suit your family's pace and needs. Guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

FAQs

How hard is the paddle upstream?

Paddling upstream does require consistent effort, especially in the first part of the tour. It's not overly strenuous for those with moderate fitness, but it is a workout. Most people find it very rewarding—and the float back downstream feels like a well-earned reward.

Do I need prior paddleboarding experience?

Nope! Previous SUP or kayak experience is helpful but not required. Your guide will teach you how to paddle from both a kneeling and standing position and how to convert your board to kayak-mode for easier upstream paddling.

What if I get tired on the way up?

That’s totally okay! We’ll catch eddies along the way for breaks, and your guide will adjust the route and pace to accommodate the group.

How does tipping work with these tours?

Guides put a lot of work into preparing your tour, running it safely, and doing their best to make your smile large and send you home with great memories; and then clean and store gear. Gratuity is not expected, but it is greatly appreciated. If you thought your guide did a great job keeping you safe, teaching you about the area and accommodating your needs, gratuities usually range between 15-20% of the tour price.

What happens if it's raining?

Tours will operate rain or shine, as long as our guides deem the conditions are safe.

What's the difference between a private tour and a mixed group tour?

Private Tour vs. Mixed Group Tour

  • Private Tours are tailored specifically to your group’s interests, fitness level, and pace. Your guide can make real-time adjustments to the route, and there’s no need to accommodate other groups’ pickup or drop-off locations. It’s a personalized, seamless experience from start to finish—perfect for families, special occasions, or anyone wanting a custom adventure.
  • Mixed Group Tours are a shared experience with other adventurers. They’re a great way to meet like-minded people and are more budget-friendly. However, the itinerary and pace are set to suit the whole group.

We love offering both options, but we generally recommend Private Tours for the best flexibility and overall experience.

What is the guest-guide ratio?

Meraki’s 6:1 Guest to Guide ratio allows us to provide proper care and attention to each guest and support them in pushing their unique limits. For those looking for an exceptionally chill experience it also allows us to lavish in good stories and top food recommendations.

Are your guides certified?

All Meraki guides have an active Wilderness First Responder medical certification. This 80-hour wilderness medical course covers a wide variety of situations and issues that could happen in the outdoors and how to manage them professionally. Our rock climbing guides are also certified by the Professional Climbing Guides Institute. All Meraki guides carry a comprehensive first aid kit, as well as a Garmin inReach satellite communication device for when cell service is spotty.

Do you provide food or snacks?

The essential fuel of a good adventure! We pride ourselves on having good (mostly organic) food and good snacks on our trips. Any tour that is over 3 hours in length will have a mostly organic with local ingredients, gourmet sandwich from our Durango Natural Foods Co-op. We care about the quality of nutrition that goes into our bodies, and we share that same standard for our guests. Be sure to check the inclusions and exclusions above for what's included in your tour.

Can I join a tour as a solo guest?

Yes! Solo travelers are always welcome. You can join one of our mixed group tours, which are a fun and social way to experience the outdoors with other like-minded adventurers.

Prefer a more personalized experience? You can also book a private tour as a solo guest, with one-on-one attention from your guide. Either way, we’re happy to accommodate and help you make the most of your time outside!
