La Parguera Kayak Tours
La Parguera Kayak Tours - What To Know
La Parguera, a hidden gem in southwest Puerto Rico, features the La Parguera Nature Reserve with its incredible offshore mangrove islands accessible only by boat. The crystal-clear Caribbean waters make this a year-round visitor favorite for observing tropical fish, ancient sea turtles, wandering iguanas, and the unreal arching mangrove roots. Mangroves are tropical plans that have large arching roots that dive into the water down to the seabed soil. These are incredibly important ecosystems that provide homes for many juvenile creatures to grow into adults and then enter the open ocean.
La Parguera is also famous for the natural phenomenon of bioluminescence at this bay, one of only three in Puerto Rico and the only one where you can swim amidst the glowing blue plankton. The best time to visit the bio bay is around the new moon and during the dry months, December to March with a midsummer dry season June to July. The opportunity to kayak both during the day and night to experience the natural wonders of mangrove forests and glowing bioluminescence make this a top-tier kayaking destination.
La Parguera Bioluminescent Bay Kayaking Tours
Kayaking here at night is truly magical, as the microorganisms in the water light up around your paddle, creating a mesmerizing glow. The tour will take you in a boat along the coast to the renowned lagoon where you can find bioluminescent algae. You can kayak and swim in the glowing water of the bay, which is shallow, calm water protected by reefs and mangroves.
Guided tours are led by knowledgeable locals who not only help navigate these pristine waters but also share insights into the ecosystem and the importance of its preservation. Their expertise ensures that kayakers of all levels have a safe and memorable experience.
Where La Parguera Kayaking Tours Go
Bioluminescent Bay
This bay in La Parguera is famous for its bioluminescence, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to swim amidst the glowing waters - an experience exclusive to this location in Puerto Rico. Caused by a specific type of algae found in oceans and bays that when the organism is disturbed, a chemical reaction in their body occurs, producing light energy. If you want to learn more, please check out our blog post, Bioluminescence Kayaking, that goes into more detail!
Off-Shore Mangrove Islands
Daytime kayaking in La Parguera takes you through small mangrove patches and islets. The Canales de la Parguera consist of more than 30 cays and islets, primarily formed by mangrove trees. These canals are believed to have been created by natives hundreds of years ago for hurricane protection. In the calm waters of the canals, you may see resting pelicans, tropical birds, small monkeys, and marine animals such as brightly-colored fish, manatees, and even sea turtles! Many kayaking tours include stops at islets such as Cayo Majimo or Cayo Caracoles, known for its shallow waters forming a natural pool in the middle of the ocean.
Top Tips for Kayaking in La Parguera
- Best Time to See Bioluminescence: Visit during the dry months, December to March and June to July, for the best bioluminescence. Aim for nights closest to the New Moon for minimal light interference and to see the brightest glowing.
- Prepare for the Mangrove Islands: Many of the mangrove islands have only shallow water and no dry land. Pack items in dry bags, use waterproof cases for phones, and bring plenty of water and food.
- Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Even though you’re not snorkeling, you most likely will still be swimming. Use mineral or reef-safe sunscreen to protect fragile coral reefs and even mangrove roots from harmful toxins found in some sunscreens.
- Respect Marine Life: Observe wildlife from a distance without chasing or harassing them. Never feed or touch animals, even if they approach you out of curiosity.
- Stay Hydrated: Kayaking and swimming in the hot Puerto Rican sun can be intense. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
- Follow Leave No Trace Principles: Keep all trash with you and secured down while kayaking and dispose of it properly when back at the boat ramps or in town.
