Los Barriles Paddle Board Rentals - What to Know

Los Barriles paddle board rentals offer an incredible way to explore the calm, clear waters of the Sea of Cortez, with stunning views of the Sierra de la Laguna mountains. This East Cape destination is ideal for wildlife encounters, where paddlers can spot dolphins, sea lions and rays, with seasonal opportunities to see humpback and gray whales. The best time for paddleboarding in Los Barriles is spring to early summer (April to July) when the winds are mild, and the waters are smooth. If you prefer fewer crowds and the chance to see nesting sea turtles, late summer to fall (August to October) is an excellent time to visit.

Best Time for Paddleboarding in Los Barriles

  • Winter (December to March) – While the humpback and gray whales migrate through the area, the seasonal El Norte winds can make paddling more challenging. The whale watching is incredible, but conditions are better suited for experienced paddlers.
  • Spring to Early Summer (April to July) – This is the sweet spot for paddleboarding, with calm seas and mild winds. During this time, mobula rays are highly active, making it an exciting time to be on the water.
  • Late Summer to Fall (August to October) – The calmest seas of the year, perfect for a peaceful paddleboarding experience without crowds. Plus, it’s a great time to witness sea turtles nesting along the beaches.
  • Early Winter (November to December) – Before the winds return, the cooler weather and calm waters make for excellent paddling conditions, with stunning sunrises and tranquil mornings.

For the best experience, head out early in the morning to enjoy calm waters and spectacular sunrises. Los Barriles’ unique location offers unparalleled wildlife encounters, including humpback whales (December to April), mobula rays (April to July), and year-round sightings of dolphins.

Why Choose Paddleboarding in Los Barriles

Paddleboarding is a fantastic way to explore the water with a unique perspective. Unlike kayaking, where you sit and paddle, paddleboarding lets you stand up and glide across the surface, giving you a full-body workout while allowing easy transitions between paddling and snorkeling. It also offers more freedom to get in and out of the water, making it perfect for a relaxing or adventurous day on the water.

Where to Go Paddleboarding in Los Barriles

Los Barriles Beach (Playa Los Barriles)

The easiest area to access with SUP rentals right on shore! The beach is ideal for beginners and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. You can often spot dolphins, manta rays, sea lions, and small schools of fish, particularly near the rocky areas of the coastline.

Punta Pescadero

About a 40 minute drive north of Los Barriles. This area is a paddler’s paradise, known for its calm, crystal-clear waters and beautiful coastline. It's perfect for a relaxing paddle while taking in the dramatic desert landscape that meets the sea. You might encounter sea turtles, playful dolphins, and various species of rays, especially during the warmer months.

El Cardonal

About 35 minutes north of Los Barriles, El Cardonal is a hidden gem known for its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. This quiet coastal town offers a more relaxed atmosphere compared to its popular neighbors, making it a perfect spot for paddleboarding. The waters around El Cardonal are teeming with marine life, including sea lions, schools of colorful fish, and the occasional pod of dolphins.

Choosing the Right Paddleboard

Selecting the right board is essential for an enjoyable experience:

  • Single Paddleboards – Best for solo paddlers who want maneuverability and independence.
  • Tandem Paddleboards – Ideal for two people who want to share the effort while enjoying a stable ride.
  • Inflatable Paddleboards – A popular option for beginners as they provide extra stability and are easy to transport.

Weather & Water Conditions in Los Barriles

Just like kayaking, weather plays a key role in your paddleboarding experience:

  • Light wind is ideal, as strong winds make balancing more difficult.
  • Tides and currents can impact paddling, so it's important to be aware of local conditions.
  • Avoid areas with strong surf or kiteboarding activity, as waves and wind can make it harder to stand and paddle.

Exploring with a Paddleboard

Paddleboarding is perfect for exploring multiple areas, especially if you’re combining it with snorkeling. You can move at your own pace, stop to enjoy the scenery, or jump in to explore the vibrant marine life.

Whether you're looking for an active adventure or a relaxing cruise, Los Barriles offers amazing paddleboarding conditions year-round, with plenty of wildlife and beautiful landscapes to make your experience unforgettable!

Safety Considerations for Paddleboarding

  • Winter winds can create rough ocean conditions. Paddle in the calmer months from April to July or early in the morning to avoid the strong winds. Check the forecast for winds no higher than 10 or 12 knots, as that tends to be the limit for beginner paddlers!
  • Always Wear a Life Jacket: No matter how experienced you are, wear your life jacket. Even strong swimmers can benefit from the added safety, especially if conditions change.
  • Don’t Paddle Too Far: Paddleboarding uses your whole body and requires good balance, so it’s easier to get off course than you might think. If the wind or current shifts, it can become tough to paddle back, especially if you’re tired. Stick close to shore to stay safe, and always identify landmarks to help navigate back.
  • Buddy System: Always paddle with a friend, just in case things change unexpectedly. This way, you'll have help if needed and stay safer overall.
  • Plan Your Return: Be mindful of time and energy. Make sure you have enough daylight to return and be aware of your stamina to get back to shore. Wear bright colors or a safety flag to ensure boats can easily spot you.

Wildlife Guidelines - SUP in Los Barriles

Being responsible on the water ensures that the beauty of Los Barriles is preserved for future paddlers to enjoy. From mobula rays to whales or seahorses, please always keep your distance and do not touch, feed, chase, or harass.

Keep Your Distance & Passively Watch

When you're out on the water, it’s important to remember you’re a guest in the animals' natural habitat. Always give wildlife plenty of space, maintaining a safe distance of at least 50 feet (15 m), especially from larger creatures like whales. Never paddle directly toward animals. If animals are approaching you, stop paddling and let them move freely. If they come closer, stay calm, enjoy the moment, and avoid sudden movements. Keeping your distance allows you to appreciate their natural behavior without disturbing them.

Avoid Feeding or Interacting with Marine Life

Resist the urge to feed wildlife. It disrupts their natural habits, and can even create dependency on human interaction, which harms their ability to survive. Not to mention, feeding or trying to touch marine animals can lead to aggressive behavior or even dangerous encounters. It’s best to observe from afar, allowing the creatures to thrive without interference. Remember, not only can it be stressful for the animals, but in some cases, engaging with wildlife can also be legally restricted in protected marine areas.

Follow the Rules and Respect the Environment

The waters around Los Barriles are protected by local marine conservation laws designed to preserve the delicate ecosystem and its inhabitants. Be sure to follow any guidelines from your rental shop or guide, especially regarding protected areas like turtle nesting zones or coral reefs. Understanding these regulations is crucial to ensuring that your time on the water doesn’t inadvertently harm the environment.

Minimize Your Impact

To help maintain the pristine condition of the area, minimize noise and avoid splashing excessively when paddling. If you decide to stop and take a break, be mindful of sensitive areas like seagrass beds or coral reefs—avoid anchoring in these locations. Keep the area clean by taking all trash with you, and leave no trace of your visit. Please only use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the coral reefs nearby.

Top Tips for Paddleboarding in Los Barriles

  • Follow Safety Guidelines: Please listen to the instructions provided by the rental outfitter. These guidelines are there to keep you safe and provide the best experience for you! Please listen to all safety briefings and always stay aware of your surroundings and the members in your group!
  • Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Please use reef-safe sunscreen to avoid polluting the clear waterways! With so many visitors a year, it is essential to keep the waters as clean as possible for the wildlife!
  • Respect Marine Life: Observe wildlife from a distance without chasing or harassing them. Never feed or touch animals, even if they approach you out of curiosity. Please stay off the reef at all times.
  • Stay Hydrated: Kayaking and swimming in the hot sun can be intense. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Follow Leave No Trace Principles: Keep all trash with you and secured down while on the kayak and dispose of it properly when you’re near a trash can or back at your hotel.

What do I bring with me paddleboarding?

  • Water shoes or sandals with straps
  • Towel
  • Dry bag
  • Water & snacks
  • Sun shirt, Hat and/or sweatshirt depending on the time of year
  • Waterproof Camera - The company is not responsible for any damaged or lost items.

I’ve never been paddleboarding before; can I still rent a SUP?

There are plenty of beginner-friendly spots to choose from so you can absolutely go for the first time! Check out our Ultimate Guide to Paddle Boarding for all the information you need for your paddle boarding adventure - from types of boards, what to wear, and where to go!

What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.

Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’

What is the weight limit for paddleboarding?

Typically, the weight limit for a standard paddleboard is 200 to 500 lbs (91 to 227 kg), with some larger paddleboards being able to hold 700 lbs (318 kg).

What if I fall off my paddleboard?

Falling off a paddleboard is extremely common when learning how to use an SUP for the first time and even common as an experienced paddleboarder! A leash is attached to the board and should stay attached to your ankle at all times so when you fall off the board does not float away and you can use the leash to pull it back towards you. If you are a weak/inexperienced swimmer or have a fear of the water, we recommend you wear your flotation at all times while in the kayak.

What about sharks?

Sharks are rarely encountered near Los Barriles in shallow snorkeling, paddleboarding, or kayaking areas. However:

  • Species Present: Harmless reef sharks, like the white-tip and nurse sharks, are sometimes seen in deeper waters or dive sites.
  • Safety: These sharks are not a threat to humans and are generally shy, avoiding interaction. Stick to guided tours or recommended areas for added safety and peace of mind.
