Kailua Beach Paddle Board Rentals - What to Know

Kailua Beach is a fantastic spot for both beginner and seasoned paddleboarders. The reef-protected waters of Kailua Bay offer a calm environment, perfect for paddlers of all skill levels.

You can set off to explore a variety of offshore islands, wildlife sanctuaries, and secluded beaches at your own pace. Paddleboarders often have the chance to spot Green Sea Turtles, monk seals, and other marine life during their visit. Snorkel gear is also available for rent, so you can dive into the stunning coral reefs of Kailua.

Where to Paddleboard in Kailua

The best spots for paddleboarding in Kailua are all along its beautiful, expansive beach. Most people launch from the popular Kailua Beach Park, which offers easy access for paddling over to Lanikai Beach or out to the Mokulua Islands, known for their bird sanctuaries. Frequently visited by sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals, the island offers an unparalleled, unique SUP experience. Remember, if you head to the Mokulua Islands, the wind will be at your back on the way out, but you’ll be paddling against it on the return trip.

Nearby Popoi'a Island is another popular place to paddle to, and is known for its rich marine wildlife. For most, it's just a quick 15 minute paddle from Kailua - it features unique Hawaiian bird life, sea life, snorkeling and paddling.

Another short paddle away from Kailua Bay is Lanikai Beach, known as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. A rock and coral formation break creates gentle waves that make it a great spot for SUP.

For less experienced paddleboarders, we recommend joining a guided SUP tour of Kailua Bay to explore the area safely. Most tours include snacks, water, and sometimes lunch. Seasoned locals suggest bringing a dry bag, plenty of water, and some delicious snacks to enjoy on your paddleboarding adventure.

When to Go Paddleboarding in Kailua

The ideal time to visit Kailua for paddleboarding is between January and May, when temperatures are at their best. For those looking to avoid the crowds, consider visiting between April and June or September through December. Mornings are usually the calmest across the Hawaiian Islands, and Kailua is no exception. The best time to paddleboard is before noon when the winds are gentler. No matter when you decide to go, always check the weather forecast if you plan to paddle offshore.
