The ride spans approximately 8 miles (13 kilometers) and offers stunning views of San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz Island, and the city skyline as cyclists cross the bridge's dedicated bike lane.

If I ride over the Golden Gate Bridge, how do I return from Sausalito?
- Ride the bike back
- Buy a ferry ticket in Sausalito and take the ferry back to Fisherman's Wharf
- Take a taxi back (most taxis in Sausalito have bicycle racks).
- Take a ride share (XL Uber) with the bikes.
Do we have to take the ferry back?
Nope! The ferry is completely optional, and you can cycle both ways on the Golden Gate Bridge. Keep in mind that the return from Sausalito to Fisherman's Wharf is uphill.
Where does the ferry drop you off?
The Sausalito ferries will drop you off at either Pier 41 (right by Fisherman’s Wharf) or Pier 1, the San Francisco Ferry Building (near Justin Herman Plaza). The Tiburon ferries will drop you off at Pier 1, the San Francisco Ferry Building. Most rental shops have a ferry schedule available.
Where do I buy ferry tickets and do I need a reservation?
You can purchase ferry tickets at most rental shops, or in person at the ferry terminal. In peak times a priority boarding system may be in operation at the Sausalito ferry terminal, and we encourage you to check in at the ferry terminal upon arrival in Sausalito. Walk-on customers board on a first-come, first-served basis.
How safe is the ride over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito?
The ride is a beginner ride along a mostly flat bike path, and you’re completely away from traffic the majority of the time. It’s a very safe ride and suitable for the whole family!
I'm traveling to San Francisco with young kids. What do you recommend?
Most rental shops offer a wide variety of kids' accessories! Very young children may prefer a baby seat, where the child sits directly behind you on the bike, or a trailer, which attaches behind an adult bike. The trailer is lower to the ground and can fit up to two small children – many come back fast asleep! For children who like to know what’s going on at all times, the baby seat is higher and offers a much better vantage point. Some shops also offer kids bikes for older kids who are capable of riding on their own.
How long does it take to bike the bridge and return by ferry?
About 3-4 hours round-trip. It will take about 20-30 minutes ride to the beginning of the Golden Gate Bridge from Fisherman's Wharf. It will take another 10-20 minutes to bike cross the Golden Gate Bridge (1.8 miles). Then, it is about 15-20 minutes (2 miles) mostly downhill to Sausalito after the bridge. The ferry ride takes 30 minutes to Fisherman's Wharf, and 20 minutes ride back to Fisherman's Wharf.
Does San Francisco have good weather for biking?
Being a coastal city, San Francisco has a generally mild climate making it a great year-round biking destination. However, the proximity to the coast means that weather in San Francisco can vary dramatically - it can be sunny one minute, and foggy the next, and varies from neighborhood to neighborhood! In Sausalito, it's almost always sunny and ten degrees warmer. We always recommend dressing in layers: dress comfortably enough for your bike ride but also consider the variations in the weather.
If I want to rent a bike for multiple days, can I keep it overnight?
Some shops offer multi-day rentals. Most will require that you store the bike indoors to avoid theft. It's common for shops to offer a damage insurance policy, but this typically doesn't cover theft - make sure to compare policies and review your options if you're considering insurance.
Should I rent a bike in San Francisco or take a guided tour?
It all depends on the experience you're looking for! Bike Rentals are great if you want the freedom to go at your own pace. If you like exploring and navigating on your own, this is the most cost-effective method of biking.
If you don't want to take the time to research what the best places to bike to are and how to get there, bike tours are a great option. You'll pay slightly more, but you'll have access to a professional and knowledgeable guide who can share their local expertise.
