Description

Pedal Into Nature’s Most Magical Show of Bioluminescence in La Parguera!

Experience the magic of La Parguera’s world‑famous bioluminescent bay in a completely unique way—on a pedal‑powered Chiliboats waterbike! Glide quietly over the calm waters for about 20–25 minutes to reach the glowing bay, where you’ll spend 30 minutes surrounded by nature’s own light show. Unlike glass‑bottom boats, you’ll be right on the water’s surface, watching each stroke of your pedals leave a trail of glowing blue light.
As you ride back under the starlit Caribbean sky, take in the tranquil silence and sweeping night views. This eco‑friendly tour is designed to protect the delicate ecosystem—swimming in the bay is not permitted under Puerto Rico’s Regulation No. 2023‑02 and Regulation 8013, ensuring this natural wonder remains pristine for generations to come.
Bioluminescence is a wild and unpredictable phenomenon; brightness can vary with the moon cycle, tides, and weather. Your experienced guides will always choose the best timing and conditions for the brightest experience possible.

FAQs

What makes Chiliboats unique?

Chiliboats are catamaran-style waterbikes, designed for comfort, stability, and easy pedaling. Thanks to our human anatomy, pedaling feels natural and effortless, using your legs at all times. They also feature an ergonomic saddle with a rigid backrest, providing extra comfort throughout the ride. All tours are conducted on double Chiliboats.

Why can’t we swim in the Bio Bay?

To preserve the area, swimming is not permitted by a new order of the Department of Natural Resources (Regulation No. 2023-02 and Regulation 8013) put in place in 2023. The area this tour visits on the tour is inside of these restricted and protected areas. Enjoy the bioluminescence from the waterbikes themselves!

Why do I need to use DEET-free insect repellent?

Most DEET-based repellents and lotions are banned on bio bay tours because these chemicals can harm the dinoflagellates. Tour operators recommend using DEET-free balms or creams and applying them at least 30 minutes before your tour to reduce transfer to the water.

What is bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence is caused by microscopic plankton called dinoflagellates (Pyrodinium bahamense). When their water is disturbed—by paddles, hands, or waves—they emit a bright blue-green glow as a defense mechanism.

Can we take pictures during our bio bay tour?

Yes, but with caveats. It’s challenging to capture the glow with standard phone cameras or DSLRs without specialized settings. For the best results, a waterproof camera with long exposure is recommended. Phone cameras often fall short in capturing the full effect; your best bet is to enjoy the moment and cherish the live experience.

When is the best time to see the bioluminescence?

The bioluminescent intensity depends on weather conditions such as rain, tide, moon phase, sunlight and many other natural factors out of our control. Ideally, the best time to visit is around the new moon and during the dry months, December to March with a midsummer dry season June to July.

Where can I learn more about bioluminescence?
