Description
Shorty Town™ Via Ferrata – Guided Climbing Experience Near Zion
Via ferrata routes have drawn adventurers across the European Alps for over a century. The concept is simple and brilliant: fixed cables, iron rungs, ladders, and bridges bolted directly into the cliff face, allowing people to ascend dramatic vertical terrain without the technical demands of traditional rock climbing. What was born in Austria and Germany and made famous in Italy during World War I is now one of the fastest-growing adventure experiences in the world — and Southern Utah has one of only a handful of routes in the entire United States.
Shorty Town™ is that route. Built and operated on private land just outside Zion National Park, it takes you to places most visitors will never see — high above Oak Creek Canyon, 450 feet above the canyon floor, with views of the Eye of the Needle™ waterfall and the surrounding desert cliffs that are genuinely unlike anything else in the region. The experience is designed from the ground up to be accessible to people without climbing backgrounds, while still delivering the kind of vertical exposure and physical engagement that makes this memorable in the way that easy experiences rarely are.
The day begins in Virgin, where guides transport your group to a remote cabin for gear-up and instruction. From there, a steep, scenic trail with chains and moki steps leads to a 75-foot practice wall — two routes, 60–90 minutes of learning how to move in a harness, manage your own connection points, and build confidence on the rock. Completing the practice wall is required before continuing to the main route. Then the adventure shifts entirely: you descend to the rim of the Eye of the Needle™, clip into the system, lean back from 450 feet above the canyon floor, and lower down to the platform where Shorty Town™ begins. From there, the via ferrata ascent climbs back up through cables, rungs, and ladders anchored into the cliff, with knowledgeable guides supporting your movement and sharing the context of what you're climbing through.
The elevated location means cooler temperatures than the main canyon — making this a particularly appealing option during summer when the canyon floor is sweltering. Spring through fall are the best seasons, though the experience runs year-round depending on conditions.
No prior climbing experience is required. What is required is a reasonable level of physical fitness, comfort with heights, and a willingness to be actively responsible for your own movement and safety. This is an adventure that asks something of you, and delivers accordingly.

FAQs
What exactly is a via ferrata?
Via ferrata — Italian for "iron path" — is a protected climbing route using fixed cables, iron rungs, ladders, and bridges anchored directly into the cliff. It allows you to climb dramatic vertical terrain without the rope systems and technical skills required for traditional climbing. The experience sits somewhere between hiking and rock climbing: physically engaging, vertically exposed, and genuinely adventurous, but accessible to people with no climbing background.
Do I need any prior experience?
No prior climbing experience is required. The 60–90 minute practice wall session at the beginning of the day is specifically designed to teach you everything you need before continuing to the main route. Completing it successfully is required before accessing Shorty Town™ — guides assess readiness as part of the session.
What is Shorty Town™?
Shorty Town™ is the name of the main via ferrata route. It begins after you're lowered from the rim of the Eye of the Needle™ — 450 feet (137 m) above the canyon floor — to a platform, then ascends via the fixed cable and rung system back up through the cliff face. The views throughout include the Eye of the Needle™ waterfall and Oak Creek Canyon.
How is this different from the Eye of the Needle® Canyoneering and Via Ferrata Tour?
The Eye of the Needle® Canyoneering and Via Ferrata Tour combines a full slot canyon descent (9–10 rappels including a 400-foot waterfall) with the via ferrata ascent — a longer, more demanding, and more technically complex full-day experience for confident adventurers. The standalone Via Ferrata (Shorty Town™) focuses exclusively on the via ferrata experience and is more accessible for those who want the vertical climbing experience without the canyoneering component. If you're unsure which is right for your group, contact staff.
What if I'm scared of heights?
Some exposure on this route is significant — 450 feet above the canyon floor is genuinely high. Participants with a strong fear of heights should consider this carefully. That said, the fixed cables and safety system are reassuring for many people who wouldn't describe themselves as comfortable with heights. There is also the option to hike to the practice wall, try the lower routes, and observe the main route from the landing or balcony without committing to the full ascent. Guides support all levels of comfort throughout the day.
Why is there a weight limit?
The harness and safety systems are rated for a weight range of 88–260 lbs (40–118 kg). Outside of this range, the equipment cannot be used safely. One-on-one guiding with a belay may be available for those outside this range — contact staff to discuss before booking.
Is this a good summer activity?
Yes — the elevated location and remote terrain mean significantly cooler temperatures than the main Zion Canyon floor, making Shorty Town™ one of the better options for avoiding summer heat. Spring through fall is the ideal season overall, though the experience operates year-round depending on conditions.
