FAQs
Can the Bio Bay Laguna Grande be seen any night of the year?
Yes, the Bio Bay Laguna Grande in Fajardo is one of the few places around the world where the glowing effect can be appreciated any given night!
Can you always see the bioluminescence?
Please keep in mind that this tour takes place in a natural environment and that the bioluminescent phenomenon, although rare, can be seen year round. The intensity of brightness is unpredictable and can vary.
When is the best time to see the bioluminescence?
The bioluminescent intensity depends on weather conditions such as rain, tide, moon phase, sunlight and many other natural factors out of our control. Ideally, the best time to visit is around the new moon and during the dry months, December to March with a midsummer dry season June to July.
If you are visiting during a full moon, do not worry! The organisms are actually attracted by the moonlight. What changes is our perception of the brightness. If there is a full moon, we use a brown tent, each kayak will go under the tent, it will block the moonlight and you can enjoy the glow as it is.
What is the difference between the earlier and later Bio Bay tour?
Earlier Bio Bay tour: Excellent for first time kayakers, families with kids and anyone that really enjoy being close to nature. It is also recommended for guests that might feel uncomfortable with the darkness. As the sun goes down, you’ll be able to enjoy the majestic view of the mangrove forest.
Later Bio Bay tour: Excellent for experienced kayakers. Expect TOTAL darkness. But don’t worry, the kayaks have a little light in the front and in the back so that you can follow it (not to illuminate the whole path). You’ll be able to enjoy the tranquility of the lagoon under the night skies full of stars.
*The bioluminescence is the same on the early and the late tour. We provide these details so you can determine which tour suits you better but please keep in mind if you are unable to complete the tour it is nonrefundable.
Where can I learn more about bioluminescence?

How hard is it to kayak in the Bio Bay?
This depends on how high or low the tide is on that night, but the bio bay is beginner friendly. Most of our clients are first time kayakers, so we provide you with a briefing on how to kayak prior to the excursion.

Do we have to row our own kayaks?
Yes, one of the requirements is that you are able to get in and out of the kayak on your own and be able to maneuver it. If you are an inexperienced kayaker we highly suggest you choose the earlier tour.
On each tour you will be accompanied by professional field guides. Keep in mind that the guides have their own 1 person kayak and will be there to help you if needed.
Is it safe for kids?
The minimum age for all of our trips is 6 years old. Our personnel are completely trained on safety and rescue management. It is important to notify us how many kids will be on the trip and their ages.
Should I bring a camera?
Yes, if it is a waterproof camera. If not, we recommend not bringing it. We take a lot of pictures on most of our trips and send you one photo via email as a gift and reminder of your memorable day.
What happens if it's raining?
Tours will NOT be canceled if it’s raining. It is still safe and the water is still glowing under the rain. If the tour needs to be canceled for severe weather conditions the Company will contact the client and no charges will be made. Pure Adventure will decide if the tour is canceled due to weather conditions. Guests that decide not to complete the tour or are no shows will NOT receive a refund.
