FAQs
What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?
Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.
Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’
What can I see when paddling in the mangroves?
While paddling through the mangroves of the Piñones Natural Reserve, you'll be immersed in a diverse ecosystem teeming with wildlife. Keep an eye out for tropical birds perched in the trees, iguanas basking on branches, colorful crabs scurrying along the roots, and schools of fish swimming in the clear waters below. It’s not uncommon to spot other fascinating creatures, making every paddle a unique experience in this protected environment.
If I’ve never been paddleboarding, can I go on this tour?
Absolutely! This tour is designed with beginners in mind. We start in calm, shallow waters where your guide will teach you the basics of paddleboarding, including balance and paddling techniques. Once you feel comfortable, we’ll head out to explore the mangroves at a relaxed pace, ensuring you have a safe and enjoyable experience. No prior experience is needed—just bring your sense of adventure!
