FAQs
What can I see while snorkeling in Condado Lagoon?
Condado Lagoon is a protected marine reserve, so snorkeling here gives you a close-up look at a surprisingly vibrant underwater world right in the heart of San Juan. One of the main highlights is the chance to spot West Indian manatees, which often glide through the lagoon’s calm waters. While sightings are never guaranteed, this is one of the best places in Puerto Rico to see them in their natural habitat.
In the shallows and along the mangroves, you can also see starfish, sea cucumbers, needlefish, small schooling fish, sergeant majors, mojarras, juvenile snapper, and sometimes Southern stingrays resting on the sandy bottom. The mangrove roots create a mini-ecosystem where small fish hide and feed, providing great visibility for snorkelers. Pelicans, herons, and egrets often hunt nearby, adding to the experience above the surface.
The water is typically calm and clear on good days, making it easy to float above the lagoon’s sandy floor and spot marine life without needing deep-water experience. It’s a gentle, accessible snorkeling location perfect for beginners, families, and anyone looking for a relaxed, nature-filled adventure in the city.
Can I go if I’ve never gone paddleboarding before?
Yes you can! The lagoon’s waters are the perfect place to try paddleboarding for the first time due to the calm waters. Paddleboarding is easy to learn, but we caution you... it is very addictive!

I’ve never kayaked before; can I still join?
This is a beginner friendly kayaking spot! The lagoon and mangrove tunnels are very calm and a great place to try kayaking for the first time.

What is the best time of year to paddle in Condado Lagoon?
Condado Lagoon is paddle-friendly year-round, thanks to warm tropical temperatures and generally calm waters. The best conditions usually fall between December and April, when skies are sunnier, humidity is lower, and winds are lighter. Summer and early fall are still great for kayaking, but expect hotter weather and occasional afternoon showers. No matter the season, mornings typically offer the calmest water and the clearest visibility—perfect for spotting wildlife and enjoying smooth paddling.
What if I fall off my paddleboard?
Falling off a paddleboard is extremely common when learning how to use an SUP for the first time and even common as an experienced paddleboarder! A leash is attached to the board and should stay attached to your ankle at all times so when you fall off the board does not float away and you can use the leash to pull it back towards you. If you are a weak/inexperienced swimmer or have a fear of the water, we recommend you wear your flotation at all times while in the kayak.
