Choose Kayaking or Paddleboarding in San Juan’s Condado Lagoon!

Discover the unique beauty of Condado Lagoon in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on a guided kayak or paddleboarding tour. This calm lagoon, part of the San Juan Bay estuary, is a protected natural reserve teeming with marine life, including manatees that graze on the seagrass. The lagoon is home to both natural and artificial reefs, providing a rich and diverse ecosystem. As you paddle through its calm waters, you'll be surrounded by draping mangroves and rainforest landscapes, offering a closer look at how these species coexist in their natural habitat.
Led by experienced local guides, the tour offers an opportunity to explore the lagoon without needing to get into the water. You'll be shown the most scenic and biodiverse areas, where you might spot manatees, colorful fish, and various bird species. Whether you're kayaking or paddleboarding, the adventure becomes even more rewarding as you learn about the conservation efforts that protect this essential ecosystem.
No prior experience is required, as your guide will teach you the basics of kayaking or paddleboarding before you start on the tour. FAQs

Can I go if I’ve never gone kayaking or paddleboarding before?

Yes you can! The lagoon’s waters are the perfect place to try kayaking or paddleboarding for the first time due to the calm waters. Our tour guides have years of experience kayaking/paddleboarding and will be with you all the way. The tour guides will deliberately go out of the way to make sure you are comfortable and getting the hang of it. Kayaking/paddleboarding is easy to learn, but we caution you... it is very addictive!

If you are looking for more information on beginner kayaking or paddleboarding, check out TripOutside’s blog post on Kayaking for Beginners or Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Guide for Beginners!

What if I fall out of my kayak or off my paddleboard?

Falling out of a kayak is very rare; however, there is always a risk for it to happen. Your guide is well trained for such instances and will assist you. All of our tours are done in calm waters.

Falling off a paddleboard is extremely common when learning how to use an SUP for the first time and even common as an experienced paddleboarder! A leash is attached to the board and should stay attached to your ankle at all times so when you fall off the board does not float away and you can use the leash to pull it back towards you.

If you are a weak/inexperienced swimmer or have a fear of the water, we recommend you wear your flotation at all times while in the kayak.

What about sharks?

Incidents of sharks biting people in Puerto Rico are very rare. Fatal shark bites are extremely rare, especially considering the number of people in Puerto Rico’s waters. People who enter the water need to recognize that there are hidden dangers. A number of marine animals can cause serious injury to people, and sharks are just one example. Entering the ocean should be considered a “wilderness experience,” where people are visitors in a world that belongs to the sharks. The risk of injury caused by sharks is extremely small, but it is a risk accepted by anyone who enters the shark’s world. By learning more about sharks, using common sense, and observing the following safety tips, the risk may be greatly reduced.

What kind of wildlife might I see?

Condado Lagoon is home to the Caribbean Manatee. For the best chance of seeing the manatees, we recommend visiting the lagoon in the morning, and midweek when it is less crowded. You might also encounter sea turtles and a variety of birds that call the mangroves home.

Are there any required entrance fees for Condado Lagoon?

There are no fees required to enter the lagoon.
