Description

Iconic Utah Family Trip - Bryce to Zion Guided Mountain Biking & Camping

Our Bryce to Zion guided mountain bike tour has it all: two national parks, both single and doubletrack riding, and beautiful camping. We ride in, out and between each national park using backcountry mountain bike routes, which include the spectacular singletrack of the Virgin River Rim Trail.

From the first day's hike through the hoodoos of Bryce Canyon to the final hike in the Zion Narrows, the unusual geology will continue to amaze you. The riding varies from winding singletrack to a long mileage day on rolling dirt roads where we'll arrive under Zion's 2,000 foot sandstone walls.

This is a terrific guided mountain bike trip that takes you up and over several large plateaus that form Southwest Utah's most distinct geological features. You can control the challenge, as the support van is never far away. Check out the full itinerary below, and see what our guided adventures are all about through TripOutside's personal epic journey with Western Spirit.

MEETING PLACE AND TIME

St. George, UT This tour will begin at 7:30 AM MST at the Holiday Inn St. George Convention Center, 1808 South, Crosby Way, St. George, UT 84790. You will need to spend the night in St. George because none of the shuttle services from Las Vegas or Salt Lake run early enough. See more details in “Lodging Before Your Trip”.

ENDING TIME

We will return to St. George between 3:00-4:00 PM on the last day. You will have time to catch a shuttle back to Las Vegas, but not to Salt Lake.

Ages & Requirements

This family-friendly trip is best suited for riders with an intermediate fitness level who are comfortable riding a mix of dirt roads, doubletrack, and moderate singletrack. Daily mileage ranges from 15 to 35 miles, with optional riding on several days for those who want a bigger challenge. Riders should be prepared for some climbs, long days in the saddle, and changing elevation—from 4,000 to 9,000 feet—which can affect stamina and performance.

While we welcome families and riders as young as 5 years old, all participants must be able to meet the physical demands of the trip. If you're considering bringing a younger rider, please include their age and biking experience in your booking request form. We’ll be happy to assess whether this trip is a good fit or discuss a private tour option that may be better suited to your group. As with all Western Spirit tours, a support vehicle is nearby and can provide a lift or shorten rides when needed.

Itinerary

Itinerary

DAY 1

After loading up we will make our way to Bryce Canyon National Park. Bryce is known for its colorful and strangely eroded cliffs. The unique layers of Bryce are formed in the 43 million year old Claron Formation; an iron rich layer of limy sediment. We will ride into the park and over to Sunset Point for a hike down into the canyon. Here we will find ourselves surrounded by an array of fantastic shapes called hoodoos. After lunch we will ride out of the park on a series of dirt roads and ATV trails into the backcountry to our camp just above the Sevier River Valley on the Paunsaugunt Plateau. TOTAL MILEAGE: 16 miles riding, 2- 3 miles hiking

DAY 2

Today, we’ll begin with a 1,200 foot climb to the top of the Sunset Cliffs. From the summit, far reaching views can be enjoyed in all directions. To the north, the Paunsaugunt Plateau and the Table Cliffs Plateau loom upwards some 2,000 feet. To the east lie the canyons of Bryce. To the south are the Pink Cliffs and to the west lies the main fork of the Sevier River and the Markagunt Plateau. After a short rest stop in this breathtaking setting, we’ll begin a fun-filled, 2,000 foot doubletrack descent that takes us to the small town of Hatch on the Sevier River. We’ll load up here into the van and shuttle the rest of the way across the plateau to our camp in the aspen trees. From here we will ride to Strawberry Point for a spectacular afternoon view, with optional singletrack through the aspens back to camp. TOTAL MILEAGE: 15 miles, 10 miles optional

DAY 3

Today we will ride on the spectacular Virgin River Rim Trail. The trail contours through the trees along the edge of the plateau. The Pink Cliffs drop below us, stepping down to the Grey Cliffs of Zion in the distance. The trail is fairly wide with challenging climbs and swooping descents, and the route that it follows along the edge of the rim is brilliant. We will stop for a short hike to Cascade Falls, the underground outlet of Navajo Lake and the source of the Virgin River. This is the river that created the dramatic canyons of Zion. From here there is either a strenuous climb along the rim to the ridge line for more great riding with an amazing three mile descent to camp at Navajo Lake, or a mellow ATV track to the fun and rolling singletrack around the lake. Navajo Lake is great for an afternoon swim, and afterwards we enjoy a delicious dinner among the whispering aspens and tall grasses on the west side of the lake. TOTAL MILEAGE: 16 miles, 10 miles optional

DAY 4

Todays ride will trend downhill as we work our way towards Zion. We begin gliding through the aspen trees descending and descending and descending. At last we will cross the North Fork of the Virgin River and begin an ascent through Orderville Gulch. After lunch we continue our descent connecting the last few miles to camp via pavement.

TOTAL MILEAGE: 35 miles (our support vehicle is always available)

DAY 5

From camp, we will continue on the road till reaching the red pavement of Zion, heralding the entrance of the park. Once inside the park, prepare for one of the most beautiful sections of road riding you will ever do. After a quick van ride through the tunnel, we will continue pedaling north through the park under the Great White Throne, the West Temple, and the Mountain of the Sun. to begin our hike. The **Zion Narrows is one of the Colorado Plateau’s most spectacular canyons. The Virgin River has cut down through the sandstone for almost a million years, creating an amazingly narrow canyon. In places, the river completely fills the canyon, in June and September this hike may not be possible due to high water levels, yet in the hot summer months when the water flow is lower, we can hike right through it. Either way, we have many incredible options. We’ll have lunch on the trail today and after our ride back down the canyon we’ll load up for the shuttle back to St. George.

TOTAL MILEAGE: 24 miles riding, 2-4 miles hiking.

**The Zion Narrows is a river hike where you will be hiking in the river. Tennis shoes, water shoes or sandals with a heel strap are recommended.

Packing List

Be sure to bring everything on this list. We have carefully developed this list to ensure your comfort on the tour regardless of the weather. If you are prepared for extreme weather, it is an adventure. If you are not prepared it can be a serious problem. We recommend the layering system, including a wicking or long underwear layer, an insulating layer and a weather barrier for wind and rain. This list reflects that philosophy. Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable so be sure to bring all the warm clothing and rain gear listed!

HOW TO PACK: The bulk of your gear and clothing will ride in the Western Spirit support vehicle (preferably in a large duffle bag) and will not be accessible during the day.

For this trip, you will need a riding pack and optional day bag:

  •  Your riding pack may be a hydration pack, but needs to carry 2-3 liters of water, rain gear, other warm clothing, and food for the day. You may be away from camp and the support vehicle all day and need to be self-sufficient.
  • A small day bag is optional and may be used to store things you’d rather not ride with, but would like to have access to during the day. This day-pack will remain with the support vehicle and may not be accessible, depending on the day.

They are committed to helping people experience the outdoors and have a wealth of knowledge to share. Their attention to every detail leaves you free to enjoy the riding.

It’s our philosophy that everyone in our busy world needs to get outside more. We know it’s tough to squeeze it all in, but with Western Spirit we’re here to make it as easy as possible. We believe in getting away from it all, spending rejuvenating time in nature, and most of all, having a lot of fun!

What's included in the trip price?

The trip price includes food and drinks for the trip, guides, support vehicle, campsites, permits, and any entry fees into national parks and public lands.

Not included are: rental fees (bikes and camping gear), alcoholic beverages, gratuities for your guides, and applicable sales tax. If you would like to bring alcoholic beverages we will store them for you at the appropriate temperature.

Your total tour cost will include your trip fee, appropriate rental fees and applicable sales tax

Are drinks included?

We provide water, coffee, teas, electrolyte drinks, and assorted soft drinks. We cannot provide alcohol. You are welcome to bring your favorite alcoholic beverages and our guides will store them at the appropriate temperature. We’ll keep the beer cold while you’re out riding!

Is food included?

Yes! From lunch on the first day to lunch on the last day, we’ve got healthy and delicious food to fuel your fun. Food is one thing we take pretty seriously and we get rave reviews from our guests.

Our guides are amazing backcountry chefs and will prepare all your meals. All snacks are included. We’re sponsored by Clif Bar, and provide you with plentiful bars, snacks and electrolyte drinks. If you have specific favorite riding snacks, however, please bring them with you.

Can you accommodate my dietary restrictions?

Yes, no problem! We are happy to accommodate dietary restrictions, and we do it frequently. Our guides are masters at making sure everyone is satisfied. Please let us know when you fill out your forms so our guides can accommodate you and your needs. It is good to be specific (e.g., vegetarian but prefer tempeh over tofu) to help the guides with meal planning.

What will the weather be like?

We wish we could tell you exactly, but Mother Nature is quite unpredictable as you may know. Our trips are designed with the best weather in mind, and follow the seasons—desert trips in spring and fall, and mountain trips in the summer. By sticking to our packing list that we’ve designed for you, you’ll be prepared for whatever comes our way (bringing rain gear almost assures it won’t rain, right?).

How many people are on a trip?

Most of our permits allow us to take 13 guests and 2 guides, although many trips are smaller than our maximum allowed. Our Maze permit in Canyonlands National Park is more limited with only 7 guests and 2 guides to maintain the remote wilderness experience.

What type of bikes do you rent? What do I need to know about renting bikes?

For mountain bikes, we use the Specialized Stumpjumper ST 29ers. For road bikes, we use the Specialized Diverge E5 Elite. All our rental bikes come with flat pedals, a helmet, and one water bottle cage. We provide the water bottle and all the bike repair gear.

If you’re renting a bike from us, you do not need to show up early. Please meet at the scheduled time and we will fit you to your rented bike then.

What pedals come on your rental bikes?

All Western Spirit rental bikes come with flat pedals. If you have clipless pedals (e.g., SPD, Crank Brothers, etc.), you’re welcome to bring them along with your shoes. We swap out pedals all the time!

How should I pack my things?

The packing list will tell you how to pack, since it depends on which trip you are on. Overall, we use a 3-bag system:

Camping gear and personal items for camp (gets packed away in the morning and is inaccessible throughout the day), Small daypack (stays in vehicle and is accessible throughout the day, e.g., extra layers, prescription medications, extra snacks, etc.), Hydration pack you wear (all things you readily need, right there on your back). We recommend a 2-liter hydration system (e.g., Camelbak) to carry the things needed during the day (water, snacks, lunch, rain gear, extra layer, sunscreen, camera, etc.), and to easily hydrate without stopping.

Do I need to bring bike repair gear?

Nope! We provide spare tubes (for 26”, 27.5” and 29” wheels), lube, tool kits, and pumps.

Can I bring my own bike and camping gear?

Certainly! If you bring camping gear, please bring a tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad. We’ll provide everything else you need. Don’t worry about the camp chairs—we bring those too!

Please make sure all your gear is in excellent, working condition before you head out on your trip. If you’re bringing your own bike, please make sure it has been tuned up and is in excellent riding condition before the trip.

Do you rent camping gear?

Yes! We rent tents, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads. Sleeping bags are thoroughly washed between trips. The following prices are for the whole trip:

2-person tent – $40 Sleeping bag – $35 Sleeping pad – $15 Total $90

Will I be able to take a shower?

We offer solar showers which are a nice way to rinse off and refresh yourself, but it is not enough water to take a full-fledge shower. The showers are not private, so please bring a swimsuit and your own towel. Showers are dependent on water resources, which may be restricted if it’s a hot desert trip. Some campsites have streams and lakes available for swimming. We also recommend wet-wipes to refresh after a fun day on the bike.

When I'm camping, where will I go to the bathroom?

It’s not a glamorous topic, and we know this can be a subject of concern and embarrassment for some. We make it as easy and sanitary as possible! If we’re camping in designated campsites, we use the pit toilets available in the campgrounds. If we’re camping in the backcountry, we obey by the pack-it-in-pack-it-out rule. We set up a portable toilet lovingly called “the groover,” and put it in a private location with a stunning view. We provide a hand wash system for clean up.

What if I'm traveling by myself?

Please join us! We get solo travelers all the time and going on a bike trip is a great way to meet like-minded people. Many of our guests end up as lifelong friends after a Western Spirit trip.
