FAQs
Why can’t I swim in the bio bay?
Swimming is prohibited in Laguna Grande to protect the delicate dinoflagellates—the microorganisms that create the glowing effect. People entering the water would disturb sediment and potentially ruin water clarity, which is vital to the organisms’ health. It’s also a regulatory requirement enforced by Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural and Environmental Resources.
Why can’t I use mosquito repellent that contains DEET during my bio bay tour?
Most DEET-based repellents and lotions are banned on bio bay tours because these chemicals can harm the dinoflagellates. Tour operators recommend using DEET-free balms or creams and applying them at least 30 minutes before your tour to reduce transfer to the water.
What is bioluminescence?
Bioluminescence in Laguna Grande is caused by microscopic plankton called dinoflagellates (Pyrodinium bahamense). When their water is disturbed—by paddles, hands, or waves—they emit a bright blue-green glow as a defense mechanism.
Can we take pictures during our bio bay tour?
Yes, but with caveats. It’s challenging to capture the glow with standard phone cameras or DSLRs without specialized settings. For the best results, a waterproof camera with long exposure is recommended. Phone cameras often fall short in capturing the full effect; your best bet is to enjoy the moment and cherish the live experience.
I’ve never kayaked before; can I still join?
This is a beginner friendly kayaking spot! The lagoon and mangrove tunnels are very calm and a great place to try kayaking for the first time.

When is the best time to see the bioluminescence?
The bioluminescent intensity depends on weather conditions such as rain, tide, moon phase, sunlight and many other natural factors out of our control. Ideally, the best time to visit is around the new moon and during the dry months, December to March with a midsummer dry season June to July.
Where can I learn more about bioluminescence?
