Trail Info

The day of your lesson, just head to La Pared Beach in Luquillo, located about ten to fifteen minutes from El Yunque Rainforest.  The lesson will start with a 30 minute land session, covering ocean awareness, safety, and proper surf technique. After getting the technique down, surfers will head straight to the water for a rush of wind and waves. In the water session, you will be riding one wave after the other for 1.5 hours!  Certified instructors will show you how to read the waves, position your take off, stand up in your surfboard, and land safely. Licensed surfing professionals will be with you in the water at all times. They will be also taking complementary pictures of your experience.

Q What should I wear / bring?

Swimwear (already put on)
Sun protection (top-quality rash guards, t-shirts, and reef safe sunblock are available for sale at our beach store)
Set of dry clothes
Cash for restaurants, souvenirs, tips, etc.
Your cellphone (in case we need to contact you prior to the lesson)

Q What should I not bring?

We can keep your valuables secure at our beach store, but it is best if you keep it simple and avoid bringing the following items:

Expensive jewelry (may fall off while surfing)
Any valuable that cannot get wet or covered in sand
Alcoholic beverages

Q What are your policies?

For their own protection, guests with physical conditions, pregnant women, or those who have epilepsy, back problems, heart conditions, or dizziness are not allowed to participate. Please remember that it is your responsibility to notify us ahead of time with any concerns about your health or physical condition for the lessons. Guests with visible signs of being under the influence of alcohol or any controlled substance on the day of the lesson will not be allowed to participate.

Maximum weight limit is 250 lbs. Minimum age is 8 years old.

Q How many people are required for a lesson?

Each lesson requires a minimum of two guests requesting in order to provide the session. In the event the minimum is not met, we will contact you 1 to 2 days prior to go over alternative options (i.e. reschedule to a different date or time, pay for a private lesson, or cancel without penalty).

Q Do you offer photographs?

As part of our service, our surf instructors will be taking complimentary digital photos of your experience with us. All the photos taken by the staff will be uploaded to Surfing Puerto Rico’s Google Photos. Please allow 7-10 business days for the pictures to be posted. You get an email notification when the pictures are ready for you to view and download.

Q Should I bring a camera?

If you still want to bring a camera, make sure that it has protection for both water and sand. You will not be able to have it with you while in the water, nor any member of our staff will be able to handle it for you, so make sure to bring a companion if you want to have pictures of your experience taken with your own camera.

Q What skill is needed for surfing lessons?

No experience is necessary, and beginners are welcome!

Q I dont know how to swim. Can I still go?

Of course! First, we will not be swimming on this lesson. Our beach has a shore break and we will be surfing in shallow waters. The water will never get above the height of your chest. We will also be surfing on a sandbar, away from rip currents. Finally, you will be accompanied by at least two lifeguards at all times.

Q I already took a beginner lesson elsewhere. Can I just rent a surfboard and skip the lesson?

In order to rent a surfboard you will need to prove that you have intermediate to expert surfing experience. Our surf spot is located at a quite dynamic beach, with constantly changing rip currents and conditions. Having taken a similar surf lesson in another country, or even at another beach in Puerto Rico is not enough training for us to confidently let you go out by yourself on one of our surfboards.

Therefore, if you still have beginner level experience, we strongly recommend you to take one of our lessons, so you get a better knowledge of the beach you will be surfing on. In fact, our instructor will tailor your lesson to your experience level and needs, so don’t feel that you are just going to hear what you already know. At Surfing Puerto Rico we are addicted to having fun, but safety always comes first!

Our rentals are only for use at La Pared Beach, where our instructors and lifeguards can assist you in case of need.

Q Do you rent fiberglass surfboards?

Professional fiberglass surfboards are normally custom made to fit the surfer, very expensive, and delicate to handle. For that reason, we don’t have fiberglass surfboards available for rent. All rentals are foam surfboards and we have sizes available for every body type and weight, from fish to the classic longboard. Plus, they are super fun for all levels of experience!

Q Do you provide storage for valuables?

Absolutely! We can provide secure storage for your belongings at our surf truck. However, we recommend you to keep it simple and travel light, because we have limited space available.
