Zion Western Trailhead Shuttle - West Rim, Subway, Hop Valley & More
Pricing
Description
Zion Westbound Backcountry Hiking Shuttle – West Rim Trail, Top-Down Subway, Hop Valley, Lava Point & More
The western reaches of Zion National Park hold some of the most spectacular and least-visited terrain in the entire park — volcanic formations, high-country plateaus, ancient lava flows, and remote canyon systems that the free park shuttle simply doesn't reach. Getting to trailheads like Lava Point, Hop Valley, and Wildcat Canyon requires either your own vehicle and the local knowledge to navigate mountain roads, or a reliable shuttle that takes care of it for you.
The Western Trailhead Shuttle provides daily departures to the park's major western and Kolob Terrace trailheads, covering everything from the Lava Point / West Rim trailhead — the starting point for one of Zion's most rewarding backcountry routes — to Hop Valley for the La Verkin Creek trail to Kolob Arch, and the Wildcat Canyon / Left Fork transfer for hikers doing the one-way top-down Subway. Road conditions in this part of the park can be challenging, particularly in spring when snow lingers at elevation and dirt roads are prone to mud. Having a local driver who monitors those conditions daily removes a significant planning headache.
Destinations Served
Left Fork to Wildcat Canyon Transfer (for Top-Down Subway) — This transfer is for hikers descending the one-way, top-down Subway route. Leave your vehicle at Left Fork (your exit) and the shuttle drops you at Wildcat Canyon (your entry). A Subway backcountry permit, NPS park pass, and state-issued ID required. Technical canyon experience and equipment required. Note: If hiking the Subway bottom-up, no shuttle is needed — drive to Left Fork and park your car.
Hop Valley Trailhead — Most popular for the La Verkin Creek trail to Kolob Arch, one of the world's largest natural arches. NPS park pass and state-issued ID required.
Lava Point / West Rim Trailhead — The western terminus of the West Rim Trail and access point for several technical canyon routes including Right Fork, Kolob Creek, Boundary Canyon, Imlay, and Heaps. Lava Point typically holds snow late into spring; the last mile of road is often the last to open in the Zion high country. When the road is too muddy, passengers are dropped at Lava Point Campground for the short downhill hike on the Barney Trail to the West Rim Trailhead. When snow closes the road completely, passengers are dropped at the nearest accessible point. Call for current conditions. Technical canyoneering experience and equipment required for Right Fork, Kolob Creek, Boundary Canyon, Imlay, and Heaps.
Lee Pass Trailhead (Kolob Canyons) — Gateway to the Kolob Canyons section of the park and the La Verkin Creek trail system.

FAQs
Do I need a permit for these destinations?
Most western backcountry destinations require permits. The Top-Down Subway requires a wilderness permit obtained through Recreation.gov. Overnight West Rim trips require a backcountry camping permit. Technical canyon routes accessed from Lava Point (Right Fork, Imlay, Heaps, etc.) require wilderness canyoneering permits. Hop Valley day hiking does not require a permit beyond the park entrance fee. All permits must be secured before your shuttle date — bring your permit, NPS park pass, and a state-issued ID on the day.
How does the Subway transfer work?
Drive your own vehicle to the Left Fork Trailhead and park it there — this is where the Subway route exits, so your car will be waiting at the end of your hike. The shuttle picks you up at Left Fork at 7:45 AM and drops you at the Wildcat Canyon Trailhead, where the top-down Subway begins. When booking online, select the 7:15 AM departure and the driver will meet you at Left Fork.
What if I'm hiking the Subway bottom-up?
No shuttle needed. The bottom-up Subway route starts and ends at the Left Fork Trailhead — just drive there and park your car. The shuttle is only for the one-way, top-down descent.
What are the road conditions like to Lava Point?
Lava Point sits at high elevation and the road is often the last in the Zion area to clear of snow in spring. When roads are muddy, passengers are dropped at Lava Point Campground; when snow closes the road entirely, the closest accessible point is used. Always call ahead to confirm conditions before your shuttle date, especially March through May.
What trail does Lava Point access?
The Lava Point / West Rim Trailhead is the upper terminus of the West Rim Trail, one of Zion's most spectacular backcountry routes. Hikers can do a one-way descent from Lava Point all the way down to the Grotto shuttle stop in Zion Canyon, with Angels Landing accessible as an add-on near the bottom. The trailhead also provides access to several technical canyons — Right Fork, Kolob Creek, Boundary Canyon, Imlay, and Heaps — for those with the appropriate permits and skills.
Can I use this shuttle to reach Kolob Arch?
Yes — the Hop Valley Trailhead shuttle drops you at the start of the La Verkin Creek Trail, which leads to Kolob Arch, one of the world's largest natural arches at approximately 287 feet (87 m) wide. The roundtrip hike to Kolob Arch is approximately 14 miles (22.5 km).
What if I miss the shuttle?
Shuttles leave on time out of respect for all passengers. No refund is issued for missed shuttles. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure.
Cancellation Policy
Cancellations more than 14 days in advance will receive a 95% refund. Cancellations within 14 days of trip date are non-refundable. Weather conditions do not permit clients to cancel trips.
