Description
Yellowstone National Park - Guided Family Mountain Biking
This five-day guided mountain biking and camping trip takes you through the Gravelly Range and Yellowstone National Park, starting near Ennis, Montana. The route follows mostly packed dirt and gravel roads through the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, our route takes us along the top of the Gravelly Range northwest of Yellowstone, offering a mix of open alpine meadows, forested ridges, and river valleys. This remote part of the greater Yellowstone ecosystem remains much like it was long before Yellowstone was established as our country's first national park. You’ll ride through varied terrain with opportunities to see wildlife such as elk, moose, deer, and a variety of birds native to the region.
After a few days of awesome views, we descend to the banks of the Madison River on our way to the park itself. Yellowstone is a truly inspiring place. It is one of the only places in the world where one can actually witness dynamic geologic forces at work. Unlike most geologic wonders, where change happens over millions of years, in Yellowstone, things change from week to week! You’ll bike past geothermal features including geysers, hot springs, and fumaroles. Highlights include stops at Old Faithful, Hayden Valley, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. In addition to the geology, the abundant wildlife flourishing in the greater Yellowstone area will astound you. This is an incredible trip for viewing wildlife, and your family will love it! This trip offers a perfect mix of accessible gravel riding and immersive nature experiences in one of the country’s most iconic regions.

Itinerary
DAY 1
The Beaverhead Deerlodge National Forest is a remote area just northwest of Yellowstone National Park. After meeting in Bozeman, we will shuttle 2-1/2 hours south to Ennis, Montana, home of millions of trout, and a few people. Ennis is located near the beautiful Gravelly Range in the Beaverhead Deerlodge National Forest. After a quick pit stop, we will continue up into the mountains to the Gravelly Range Road where we will unload and begin our ride for the day. Our route takes us through beautiful alpine meadows full of wildflowers. The views from up here are world class. A few strenuous climbs and fun descents will bring us to our camp for the evening at Clover Meadows. TOTAL MILEAGE: 10 - 15 miles
DAY 2
After breakfast at Clover Meadows we will continue south, and today becomes a big climbing day. Three climbs (shuttle options are always available)! Along our route we will pass through several more stunning meadows full of wildflowers and an occasional lingering snowfield. In this area, the wildlife is abundant and we have an excellent chance of spotting deer, elk, moose, yellow-bellied marmots and several species of birds of prey. Crossing our highpoint at Monument Ridge affords us distant views of the rugged Taylor-Hilgard peaks in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. After lunch we roll along towards Black Butte and camp near Black Butte Cabin. TOTAL MILEAGE: 12 miles, optional hike
DAY 3
This morning dawns with a one mile climb and then a long descent. For the last two days we have been traversing across the ridge and today we get to descend all the way to the Madison River. Today’s ride is big fun as we lose almost 3,000 feet over approximately 20 miles. We will ride through huge stands of Lodgepole Pine, expansive meadows, through Wolverine Basin, and finally to the West Fork of the Madison River. Our riverside camp for the evening gives us the opportunity for a quick dip or perhaps a chance to fish in the famous waters of the Madison (if you brought your pole and fishing license). TOTAL MILEAGE: 20 miles
DAY 4
After riding through the Gravelly Range, we will load up the bikes, jump in the van and shuttle over to Yellowstone National Park. We start our ride on one of the few dirt paths that allow bikes in Yellowstone and enjoy incredible views of intense color and beauty. As we make our way toward the Old Faithful Geyser, we will ride a combination of paved park roads and dirt bike paths. Yellowstone National Park is a treasure and inspires awe in everyone who travels through it. Between the geysers, the abundant wildlife, and the powerful waterfalls, we are constantly impressed by its natural wonders. Our afternoon route takes us right to Old Faithful. The world’s best known geyser predictably erupts every 90 minutes, so we can tour the area and the historic Old Faithful Inn and visitors center while waiting for this must see attraction. Our last night’s camp will be inside the park at Grant Village on the West Thumb of Yellowstone Lake, North America’s largest mountain lake. TOTAL MILEAGE: 15 miles
DAY 5
After breakfast we will drive from Grant Village through Hayden Valley along the famous Yellowstone River. In this open parkland you may see moose, bison and possibly even grizzly bears, all from the safety of the Western Spirit van. Waterfowl, including white pelicans and trumpeter swans, are abundant in the marshy areas. Our stop at the Mud Volcano will show us the varied thermal features here, including the Dragon’s Mouth Spring. And yes, we are quite sure there is a real dragon in there. Our tour of the park will conclude at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone where the river plunges 1,000 feet. We will hike to Artist's point which affords us incredible views of the spectacular lower falls. Hot water acting on volcanic rock created the canyon’s yellow colors and our view from Artist’s Point is truly one to remember. After lunch we will shuttle back to Bozeman. TOTAL MILEAGE: AM van/walking tour; multiple short hikes
Packing List
Be sure to bring everything on this list. We have carefully developed this list to ensure your comfort on the tour regardless of the weather. If you are prepared for extreme weather, it is an adventure. If you are not prepared it can be a serious problem. We recommend the layering system, including a wicking or long underwear layer, an insulating layer and a weather barrier for wind and rain. This list reflects that philosophy. Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable so be sure to bring all the warm clothing and rain gear listed!
HOW TO PACK: The bulk of your gear and clothing will ride in the Western Spirit support vehicle (preferably in a large duffle bag) and will not be accessible during the day.
For this trip, you will need a riding pack and optional day bag:
Your riding pack may be a hydration pack, but needs to carry 2-3 liters of water, rain gear, other warm clothing, and food for the day. You may be away from camp and the support vehicle all day and need to be self-sufficient.
A small day bag is optional and may be used to store things you’d rather not ride with, but would like to have access to during the day. This day-pack will remain with the support vehicle and may not be accessible, depending on the day.

What's included in the trip price?
The trip price includes food and drinks for the trip, guides, support vehicle, campsites, permits, and any entry fees into national parks and public lands.
Not included are: rental fees (bikes and camping gear), alcoholic beverages, gratuities for your guides, and applicable sales tax. If you would like to bring alcoholic beverages we will store them for you at the appropriate temperature.
Your total tour cost will include your trip fee, appropriate rental fees and applicable sales tax
Are drinks included?
We provide water, coffee, teas, electrolyte drinks, and assorted soft drinks. We cannot provide alcohol. You are welcome to bring your favorite alcoholic beverages and our guides will store them at the appropriate temperature. We’ll keep the beer cold while you’re out riding!
Is food included?
Yes! From lunch on the first day to lunch on the last day, we’ve got healthy and delicious food to fuel your fun. Food is one thing we take pretty seriously and we get rave reviews from our guests.
Our guides are amazing backcountry chefs and will prepare all your meals. All snacks are included. We’re sponsored by Clif Bar, and provide you with plentiful bars, snacks and electrolyte drinks. If you have specific favorite riding snacks, however, please bring them with you.
Can you accommodate my dietary restrictions?
Yes, no problem! We are happy to accommodate dietary restrictions, and we do it frequently. Our guides are masters at making sure everyone is satisfied. Please let us know when you fill out your forms so our guides can accommodate you and your needs. It is good to be specific (e.g., vegetarian but prefer tempeh over tofu) to help the guides with meal planning.
What will the weather be like?
We wish we could tell you exactly, but Mother Nature is quite unpredictable as you may know. Our trips are designed with the best weather in mind, and follow the seasons—desert trips in spring and fall, and mountain trips in the summer. By sticking to our packing list that we’ve designed for you, you’ll be prepared for whatever comes our way (bringing rain gear almost assures it won’t rain, right?).
How many people are on a trip?
Most of our permits allow us to take 13 guests and 2 guides, although many trips are smaller than our maximum allowed. Our Maze permit in Canyonlands National Park is more limited with only 7 guests and 2 guides to maintain the remote wilderness experience.
What type of bikes do you rent? What do I need to know about renting bikes?
For mountain bikes, we use the Specialized Stumpjumper ST 29ers. For road bikes, we use the Specialized Diverge E5 Elite. All our rental bikes come with flat pedals, a helmet, and one water bottle cage. We provide the water bottle and all the bike repair gear.
If you’re renting a bike from us, you do not need to show up early. Please meet at the scheduled time and we will fit you to your rented bike then.
What pedals come on your rental bikes?
All Western Spirit rental bikes come with flat pedals. If you have clipless pedals (e.g., SPD, Crank Brothers, etc.), you’re welcome to bring them along with your shoes. We swap out pedals all the time!
How should I pack my things?
The packing list will tell you how to pack, since it depends on which trip you are on. Overall, we use a 3-bag system:
Camping gear and personal items for camp (gets packed away in the morning and is inaccessible throughout the day), Small daypack (stays in vehicle and is accessible throughout the day, e.g., extra layers, prescription medications, extra snacks, etc.), Hydration pack you wear (all things you readily need, right there on your back). We recommend a 2-liter hydration system (e.g., Camelbak) to carry the things needed during the day (water, snacks, lunch, rain gear, extra layer, sunscreen, camera, etc.), and to easily hydrate without stopping.
Do I need to bring bike repair gear?
Nope! We provide spare tubes (for 26”, 27.5” and 29” wheels), lube, tool kits, and pumps.
Can I bring my own bike and camping gear?
Certainly! If you bring camping gear, please bring a tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad. We’ll provide everything else you need. Don’t worry about the camp chairs—we bring those too!
Please make sure all your gear is in excellent, working condition before you head out on your trip. If you’re bringing your own bike, please make sure it has been tuned up and is in excellent riding condition before the trip.
Do you rent camping gear?
Yes! We rent tents, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads. Sleeping bags are thoroughly washed between trips. The following prices are for the whole trip:
2-person tent – $40 Sleeping bag – $35 Sleeping pad – $15 Total $90
Will I be able to take a shower?
We offer solar showers which are a nice way to rinse off and refresh yourself, but it is not enough water to take a full-fledge shower. The showers are not private, so please bring a swimsuit and your own towel. Showers are dependent on water resources, which may be restricted if it’s a hot desert trip. Some campsites have streams and lakes available for swimming. We also recommend wet-wipes to refresh after a fun day on the bike.
When I'm camping, where will I go to the bathroom?
It’s not a glamorous topic, and we know this can be a subject of concern and embarrassment for some. We make it as easy and sanitary as possible! If we’re camping in designated campsites, we use the pit toilets available in the campgrounds. If we’re camping in the backcountry, we obey by the pack-it-in-pack-it-out rule. We set up a portable toilet lovingly called “the groover,” and put it in a private location with a stunning view. We provide a hand wash system for clean up.
What if I'm traveling by myself?
Please join us! We get solo travelers all the time and going on a bike trip is a great way to meet like-minded people. Many of our guests end up as lifelong friends after a Western Spirit trip.
