FAQs

What type of rafts do you use?

All of our rafts are commercial 14’ self bailing whitewater rafts made by NRS and AIRE. Made in the USA to the highest quality standards, these boats are stable, lightweight, and virtually indestructible.

Do I need to paddle?

Every raft is equipped with an oar frame operated by a trained, professional guide who will row the boat. All you need to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery.

Is rafting dangerous?

Rafting is exciting and fun. However, as with all sports, there is inherent risk involved. That risk contributes to the excitement, and is one of the reasons people enjoy rafting so much.

The guides working for Willow Creek Tours are trained to minimize and manage risks, and, statistically, you’re safer in a raft than in your car.

The most common injury on most rafting trips is sunburn, and most other injuries occur on land, especially getting into and out of the boats.

I can't swim. Can I still go rafting?

Everyone on commercial rafting trips wears a coast guard approved life vest or personal flotation device (PFD). This critical piece of equipment will keep you afloat in the event that you find yourself in the river.

Many non-swimmers go on rafting trips, and they have a great time. Your guide will give you an in depth safety talk before your trip explaining what you should prepare for and do in the event you fall out of the raft.

Your guide is professionally trained in Swift Water Rescue and will work to ensure that you feel comfortable on your trip.

Will I get wet?

You may get splashed occasionally, but this is not a whitewater trip. Most guests stay relatively dry, especially in good weather.

What wildlife might I see?

Keep an eye out for bald eagles, beavers, salmon, waterfowl, and possibly moose, otters, or mink. While we can't guarantee sightings, Willow Creek is rich with wildlife.

What happens if it rains?

We raft rain or shine! Alaska weather can change quickly, so we recommend dressing in layers and bringing a rain jacket. Tours may only be canceled or rescheduled in extreme weather for safety reasons.

Can I bring my camera or phone?

Yes, but we recommend using a waterproof case or dry bag to keep your electronics safe. Your guide will let you know if there's a splashy section where you'll want to tuck it away.

Should I tip my guide?

Tips are never required but always appreciated if you feel your guide provided a great experience. A typical tip is 10–20%.
