FAQs

Should I paddle a single or tandem kayak?

Tandem kayaks are suggested if you have a member of your party who might not be able to/want to paddle the entire distance.

What should I NOT wear while paddling?

Boots, jeans, and cotton warm-up bottoms such as sweats are NOT ALLOWED as they become easily saturated and make for unsafe paddling.

Do I need to be an experienced paddler?

Not at all! This tour is perfect for all ages and experience levels.

Can my trip be canceled due to weather?

Mother Nature is unpredictable! If there are strong winds on the day your tour is scheduled, we may be able move your tour to a more protected location on the lake or reschedule your tour for another day. Your safety is our primary concern so if there are dangerous paddling conditions, we will cancel and issue a refund.

What information do I need to provide when I register for a trip?

In order to match you with the kayak/board that fits each paddler, we will request the height and weight of each participant.

It is also vital that we know the paddling experience level of each participant and any relevant medical issues so we can ensure the comfort and the safety of each paddler in a group.

You'll have the opportunity to enter all information at checkout.

What makes Wild Horse Island special?

Wild Horse Island is a protected Montana State Park and nature preserve located in Flathead Lake. It’s known for its rugged beauty, quiet trails, and abundant wildlife, including bighorn sheep, mule deer, bald eagles, osprey, and a small herd of wild horses. Because the island is undeveloped and primitive, it offers a rare opportunity to experience Flathead Lake in its most natural state.

Do we hike on Wild Horse Island?

Yes. Once on the island, guests have about 2.5 hours to explore, including hiking designated trails, wildlife viewing, photography, and enjoying a picnic lunch. Hiking is optional, and guests can move at their own pace.

What wildlife might we see on the tour?

Wildlife sightings vary by day, but common sightings include bighorn sheep, mule deer, bald eagles, osprey, and other native birds. The island is also home to a small herd of wild horses, though sightings are never guaranteed as the animals roam freely.

Is this tour suitable for beginners?

Yes. This tour is appropriate for beginners and intermediate paddlers. While the distance is longer than a short bay paddle, the pace is manageable, and your guide provides instruction, support, and safety oversight throughout the day.
