Description
Canyoneering Wetsuit Rental Package – Zion National Park Technical Canyons
Cold swims are a fact of life in Zion's slot canyons—even in midsummer. Deep, narrow corridors rarely see direct sunlight, and the water pooling in them stays cold year-round. A wetsuit doesn't just make those swims more comfortable; in some canyons and some conditions, it's the difference between a safe adventure and a dangerous case of hypothermia. The Wetsuit Package is the standard choice for warm-weather and moderate-season canyoneering, giving you the thermal protection you need while keeping you mobile and comfortable through the full range of obstacles you'll encounter.
This package includes a full wetsuit or Farmer John wetsuit with jacket—purpose-built European canyoning wetsuits designed specifically for the demands of slot canyons, not just swimming pools. Paired with canyon shoes and neoprene socks, it sets you up for the wet, cold, technical terrain of routes like Pine Creek Canyon (where wetsuits are generally required even on hot days), Keyhole Canyon, and others throughout the Zion backcountry.
This package is recommended for warm-weather canyoneering and shorter technical canyon trips. For extended canyon trips, colder conditions, or multi-pitch routes where you'll spend significant time in cold water, the Technical Canyon Drysuit Package offers more complete protection.

FAQs
Do I need prior experience to rent this gear?
Yes. This gear rental is for experienced canyoneers only. Zion's technical slot canyons involve multi-pitch rappels, cold water swims, downclimbs, and serious flash flood risk. Commercial guiding is not permitted in Zion's technical wilderness canyons, meaning your party must be fully self-sufficient. If you're new to canyoneering, staff can point you toward a canyoneering course to build the skills you'll need.
Which canyons is this appropriate for?
The Wetsuit Package is the standard choice for warm-weather technical canyons in Zion, including Pine Creek Canyon, Keyhole Canyon, and Echo Canyon. Pine Creek in particular almost always requires wetsuits due to the cold swims in its deep, sunless corridors—even when outside temperatures are hot. Staff will advise on current conditions for your specific route at pickup.
What permits do I need for Zion canyoneering?
A wilderness permit is required year-round for all technical canyons in Zion. Advance reservations for most canyons are available through Recreation.gov. The Subway (Left Fork) and Mystery Canyon use a separate lottery system. Permits must be picked up in person at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center Wilderness Desk the day before or morning of your trip. For more information, visit nps.gov/zion.
Can I rent ropes and rappelling hardware here?
No—ropes and technical canyoneering/climbing hardware are not available to rent due to the critical safety requirements involved. These items are available to purchase in-shop. Canyoneering harnesses are available to rent.
What about flash floods?
Flash flood risk is the primary safety hazard in all of Zion's slot canyons. Even in winter and early spring, storms anywhere in the canyon's watershed can send fast-moving water into narrow slots with little warning. Always check the weather thoroughly before entering any technical canyon and cancel your plans if there is any threat of precipitation. Your safety is your responsibility.
Can I pick up gear the evening before my rental?
Yes. If your sizes are available, pickup begins as early as 3:00 PM MST.
What is the damage policy?
A $300 credit card authorization deposit is required at rental. Wetsuits are European canyoning suits designed for hard use, but you must protect them—wearing clothing over the suit significantly reduces damage risk. Damage charges begin at a minimum of $20 per square inch; any damage exceeding 5 square inches, torn seams, or abrasions that pierce through the nylon and expose the rubber will result in the full $300 security deposit being charged. Normal surface fuzzing from the nylon is considered normal wear.
What thickness are the wetsuits?
Full wetsuits are 4mm neoprene through the torso and 3mm at the extremities. These are European canyoning suits built for the demands of slot canyons, not pool swimming. For extra insulation, a wetsuit jacket or Farmer John can be combined with the suit as an add-on.
Do the wetsuits come with booties?
Booties are not attached to the suits. Neoprene socks and canyon boots are both included in the Wetsuit Package. Canyon boots have grippy soles for wet sandstone, scrambling, and rappel starts, in sizes from youth 13 to men's 14.
Do you have kids' sizes?
Yes. Wetsuit sizes run from small child to adult XXL, and typically fit kids around 9 to 10 years old. No advance size reservation is needed — you'll be fitted in shop at pickup.
Do you rent dry bags or backpacks?
Yes, two options. Roll-top dry bags that go inside your own pack, or full dry bag backpacks that keep everything inside fully waterproof.
Is there a discount for multi-day rentals?
Yes. Additional days are discounted off the first-day rate for both the wetsuit package and dry bag backpacks.
Can kids do the Subway top-down?
The Subway is one of the few technical canyons in Zion that can work for kids. The rappels are not extreme and the technical sections are manageable. The bigger factor is stamina — it is a long day and the hike out has a lot of sustained uphill. Note that the Subway (Left Fork) uses a separate permit lottery.
Are helmets included?
No. Helmets are required for technical canyoneering and are available as an add-on or for purchase in shop.
