What kind of rapids are on the Wenatchee River?

The Wenatchee River features mostly Class III rapids—fun, splashy, and exciting without being too intimidating. In spring (May–June), the river runs higher and faster with big waves, while in summer (July–August), the rapids are more mellow and family-friendly.

What is the best time to go rafting on the Wenatchee River?

It depends on what you’re looking for. May and June offer the biggest whitewater and most thrilling rides. July and August bring warm weather, calmer water, and great conditions for families, swimming, and relaxing river time.

Is the Wenatchee River suitable for kids?

Yes—during summer flows (July and August), kids as young as 6 can join. During high water season (May and June), the minimum age is 12 due to the stronger rapids. All participants must be able to follow guide instructions and be comfortable in the water.

Will there be swimming opportunities?

Yes! During summer trips, there are often calm sections perfect for swimming and floating. Your guide will let you know when it’s safe to hop in and cool off.

What happens if the river is too high or low?

We adjust the put-in and take-out locations as needed to match river conditions, maintaining a safe and fun experience. If conditions ever become unsafe, we’ll offer to reschedule your trip or move it to a different river.

Are group discounts available?

Yes! We offer discounts for groups of 12 or more. You can select the group rate at checkout.

How dangerous is river rafting?

River rafting has a reputation for risk, but in reality, it’s much safer than many everyday activities—like driving a car. Our experienced guides maintain a high level of control over the raft’s course through rapids. That said, this isn’t a theme park ride. Rafting carries inherent risks, and your guide’s control depends in part on how well the crew paddles together.

And if you’ve seen The River Wild, rest assured: we won’t be running any Hollywood-style death-defying stunts. Our trips are adventurous but designed with safety as the top priority.

Do I need to know how to swim to go river rafting?

No. Everyone wears a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (PFD), which will keep you afloat—even if you can’t swim or are unconscious. However, being comfortable in the water and knowing how to swim can help you feel more confident, especially in the unlikely event you fall overboard. If the idea of being in the water causes you significant anxiety, we recommend choosing a calmer river or opting out of rafting altogether.

How often do people fall out of the boat on a river rafting trip?

Much less often than you might think—only about 1% of guests end up in the water. And if it does happen, it’s typically a brief, non-threatening experience. Most rapids can be safely floated in a life jacket, and our guides are trained in swiftwater rescue to respond quickly and effectively.

How deep is the river?

It varies. Calmer sections tend to be deeper, while fast, choppy water is often just 3–4 feet deep. Regardless of depth, if you fall out of the raft, float on your back with feet pointed downstream until you reach calmer water. Never try to stand in fast-moving current unless the water is under 18 inches deep.

Is there a weight limit to go rafting?

Not officially. However, you must be mobile enough to help yourself into the raft or allow our guides to assist you if needed. If lifting you back into the raft would pose a challenge or safety concern, we may recommend you sit this one out.

Is river rafting a family activity?

Absolutely—depending on the river’s classification and season. We allow kids as young as 6 on Class II rivers, 12 on Class III, 16 on Class IV, and 18 on Class V. For Class III and higher, we recommend a minimum weight of 100 lbs. Rivers can change character with water levels, so age limits may vary by season. When in doubt, give us a call to confirm.

What kind of food is served on overnight trips?

We serve fresh, hearty meals on our overnight adventures. Menus include deli-style lunches, seasonal fruits and veggies, chips, guacamole, and hearty entrees like soft tacos, Mimi’s Southern tuna salad, or Redside chicken barbecue. Vegetarian options are always available.

Can I wear my regular clothes under the wetsuit?

No. Wetsuits fit snugly, and street clothes—especially jeans—won’t work underneath. Keep your dry clothes for after the trip.

Why can't I wear cotton?

Cotton traps water and rapidly draws heat from your body. Synthetic materials like fleece or polypropylene insulate even when wet. Rafting is a wet sport, and the right gear can make the difference between a comfortable trip and a chilly one.

What should I bring on the raft?

Bring as little as possible. Essentials include any medications you may need (e.g., an inhaler or EpiPen), a warm change of clothes for after the trip, and an inexpensive waterproof camera if you'd like photos.

What do I do with my car keys while I'm on the river?

We offer a secure key box at the meeting site. However, we recommend arriving with a hide-a-key or leaving valuables secured in your vehicle. Keys should never go in the raft dry bag—we’re not responsible for lost items on the river.

What should I do with my valuables?

Leave them at home or hide them in your vehicle’s trunk.

Can I leave anything on the bus?

No. The bus that transports you to the river may not be the same one that meets you at the take-out. Please do not leave anything on the bus.

Where do you stay on an overnight trip?

Overnight trips involve tent camping. We provide the tents, and you can rent sleeping bags and pads if needed. These are thick and comfy enough to ensure a good night’s sleep under the stars.

How do we get down the river?

Most guests paddle together with a guide steering at the back—this is called a paddle raft. On some overnight trips, you can also ride in an oar boat (the guide rows while you relax) or paddle your own inflatable kayak. Inflatable kayak rentals must be arranged in advance.

Do I need to be physically fit to go whitewater rafting?

A baseline level of fitness helps, but you don’t need to be an athlete. You should be able to stay seated in moving water, follow basic paddling commands, and assist in self-rescue if needed. Guests with medical conditions (e.g., asthma, heart conditions, epilepsy, pregnancy) should speak with their doctor and inform their guide before the trip.
