Description

Water Canyon & White Wave Full-Day Guided Hike near St. George, Utah

This is the ultimate southern Utah backcountry challenge — a strenuous full-day hike that combines the scenic Water Canyon approach with an epic ridge-top journey to the White Waves, a stunning expanse of white sandstone domes and formations on top of Canaan Mountain with sweeping views of four national parks and monuments.
Starting from Water Canyon near Hildale, your guide leads you up the canyon, passing the waterfall, Water Canyon Arch, and cascading springs, to the rim of Canaan Mountain. From there, a traverse across the high desert plateau leads to the White Waves: a surreal landscape of smooth white sandstone sculpted into rolling wave-like domes and ridges. On a clear day from this 7,000-foot (2,134 m) vantage point, you can see Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument simultaneously.

FAQs

What are the White Waves and what makes them special?

The White Waves (also called the White Domes) are a formation of smooth, bright white Navajo sandstone on top of Canaan Mountain. The rock surface undulates in wave-like patterns and domes that glow brilliantly in the desert sun. The location sits at roughly 7,000 feet (2,134 m) elevation, offering one of the most expansive panoramic views in southern Utah — four national parks and monuments are visible on a clear day. The sandstone here has a completely different character from the red canyon walls below, making the visual contrast between Water Canyon and the summit plateau dramatic and memorable.

Why is a guide important for this hike?

The upper section of the route across Canaan Mountain involves off-trail navigation — the terrain is open slickrock and sand with few visible trail markers. Even experienced hikers frequently get disoriented here. Your guide has navigated this route many times and knows where to cross, where to gain the rim, and how to find the White Waves efficiently and safely. A guide also ensures you are monitoring water, food, and pacing to safely complete the 10-mile (16 km) day.

What is the elevation and how does altitude affect the hike?

The trailhead sits at approximately 4,500 feet (1,370 m) and Canaan Mountain's plateau reaches over 7,000 feet (2,134 m). While this is not extreme altitude, visitors acclimatizing from sea level may feel the elevation, especially on the sustained climb. Drink plenty of water, eat consistently, and pace yourself on the ascent.

Who are the guides and what are their qualifications?

Our guides are local experts with deep knowledge of the geology, history, wildlife, and ecology of southern Utah. Guides are trained in safety protocols and first aid, and are dedicated to providing both educational and entertaining experiences tailored to each group.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking at least 2 weeks in advance, and several months ahead for large groups or peak season visits to ensure availability.

What is your approach to sustainability and conservation?

Our guides follow Leave No Trace principles on all tours. Guests are asked to pack out all waste, stay on designated paths, and respect all plants, wildlife, and rock formations. We operate in and around federally protected lands and take stewardship of those landscapes seriously.

What wildlife might I encounter on tours in the East Zion area?

The East Zion and southern Utah region is home to mule deer, coyotes, jackrabbits, lizards, hawks, eagles, ravens, and a variety of desert songbirds. Mountain lions are native to the area but extremely rarely encountered. Rattlesnakes are present in the region but generally avoid human contact — wearing closed-toe shoes and watching where you place your hands is good practice.

Do tours run in bad weather?

Most tours run rain or shine. However, if severe weather creates unsafe conditions, we will offer guests a different date or a full refund. For tours involving dirt road access (such as Candy Cliffs and White Pocket), road conditions after rain may require rescheduling.
