Description

Guided Hike of Lower Water Canyon - Near St. George, Utah - Small Group or Private Hike

Discover one of southern Utah's most rewarding and under-visited hidden gems on this guided hike through Water Canyon near Hildale, Utah. Located on Bureau of Land Management land with no permit required, Water Canyon is a spring-fed finger canyon that carves into the base of Canaan Mountain on the edge of the Zion National Park wilderness area.
The hike follows a year-round stream through increasingly dramatic desert canyon scenery. Within the first mile you'll pass the beautiful Water Canyon Arch and reach a stunning alcove with a natural waterfall fed by springs. Those with more energy can continue upward through the narrowing canyon walls, past cascades, hanging gardens, and pools, with panoramic views of Zion National Park opening up in the distance. Water Canyon is a peaceful alternative to the Zion crowds.

FAQs

Can I book a private tour?

Absolutely - if you'd like a more customized experience, private tours are available for groups of up to 14. At checkout, you can select the private group option.

What makes Water Canyon special compared to trails inside Zion National Park?

Water Canyon is one of southern Utah's genuine hidden gems — located on BLM land outside the national park with no permit required and far fewer visitors than Zion's main trails. The canyon features a year-round stream, a beautiful waterfall, the Water Canyon Arch, hanging gardens, and increasingly dramatic sandstone walls as you hike deeper. Views of Zion National Park's highest formations are visible from the upper canyon.

When is the best time to visit Water Canyon?

Spring (March–May) is the best season, when snowmelt and spring rains feed robust waterfalls and greenery. Fall (September–November) is also excellent. Summer can be very hot and the upper canyon may dry out, though seeps keep some water flowing.

Is there a risk of flash flooding in Water Canyon?

Yes — Water Canyon is a narrow, steep-walled drainage that can flash flood rapidly during thunderstorms. Your guide monitors weather conditions and will not run the tour if flood risk is present.

Can I see the waterfall on this hike?

Yes — the main waterfall is located less than 1 mile (1.6 km) from the trailhead and is reachable by most hikers. Water flow is most dramatic in spring. In summer and fall the flow may be reduced to a trickle, but the canyon scenery remains stunning year-round.

Who are the guides and what are their qualifications?

Our guides are local experts with deep knowledge of the geology, history, wildlife, and ecology of southern Utah. Guides are trained in safety protocols and first aid, and are dedicated to providing both educational and entertaining experiences tailored to each group.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking at least 2 weeks in advance, and several months ahead for large groups or peak season visits to ensure availability.

What is your approach to sustainability and conservation?

Our guides follow Leave No Trace principles on all tours. Guests are asked to pack out all waste, stay on designated paths, and respect all plants, wildlife, and rock formations. We operate in and around federally protected lands and take stewardship of those landscapes seriously.

What wildlife might I encounter on tours in the East Zion area?

The East Zion and southern Utah region is home to mule deer, coyotes, jackrabbits, lizards, hawks, eagles, ravens, and a variety of desert songbirds. Mountain lions are native to the area but extremely rarely encountered. Rattlesnakes are present in the region but generally avoid human contact — wearing closed-toe shoes and watching where you place your hands is good practice.

Do tours run in bad weather?

Most tours run rain or shine. However, if severe weather creates unsafe conditions, we will offer guests a different date or a full refund. For tours involving dirt road access (such as Candy Cliffs and White Pocket), road conditions after rain may require rescheduling.
