Description

Paddle from Wailea Beach, Then Snorkel Maui’s Turtle Habitat!

Start your Maui morning right from Wailea Beach, where you'll climb aboard a traditional-style six-person outrigger canoe and paddle into the warm waters of South Maui. With Haleakalā rising behind the coastline, your group will learn to paddle together as your guide leads the way toward a local reef area known for Hawaiian green sea turtles and other marine life.

Once you reach the snorkel area, trade your paddle for a mask and fins and slip into the Pacific. Follow your guide over the reef while searching for Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu) swimming, resting, or grazing in their natural habitat. Look beyond the turtles and you may also discover octopus, sea urchins, tropical reef fish, and other creatures among the coral and lava formations. Your guide stays nearby throughout the snorkel, helping point out marine life that can be surprisingly easy to miss.

The experience isn't only about what's beneath the surface. Paddling an outrigger canoe introduces you to an important part of Hawaii's seafaring heritage, with your guide helping the group find its rhythm while sharing insight into the canoe and surrounding coastline.

At approximately an hour, this is an easy adventure to work into a Maui vacation without giving up half the day. You'll get to paddle from Wailea Beach, experience an outrigger canoe, snorkel a South Maui reef, and search for sea turtles before returning to shore with the rest of your day still ahead.

Because the reef's residents are wild animals, specific wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and all sea turtles should be observed respectfully without touching, chasing, feeding, or blocking their movement.

FAQs

Are we guaranteed to see sea turtles?

Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu) are commonly found around South Maui’s reefs, but they are wild animals, so sightings can never be guaranteed. Your guide knows the local reef habitat and will help you look for turtles and other marine life throughout the snorkel.

Do we get in the water with the sea turtles?

Yes! This is a guided snorkeling experience in sea turtle habitat, so you may be in the water while turtles are swimming, resting, or feeding nearby. However, Hawaiian green sea turtles are protected wildlife and must be given plenty of space. Never touch, chase, feed, surround, block, or attempt to interact with a turtle. Simply float at a respectful distance and enjoy watching them behave naturally.

What other wildlife might we see while snorkeling?

There’s much more to look for than turtles. South Maui’s reefs are home to tropical reef fish, moray eels, octopus, sea urchins, and other marine creatures living among the coral and volcanic rock formations. Your guide will help point out smaller or camouflaged animals that can be easy to swim past. Wildlife varies from day to day, so every snorkel is a little different.

Do I need previous paddling or snorkeling experience?

No previous outrigger canoe paddling experience is necessary. Your guide will teach you the basic paddle strokes and help everyone work together before heading out. Prior snorkeling experience is also not required, but guests should be comfortable entering and swimming in the ocean. Your guide will provide instruction and stay nearby throughout the snorkeling portion of the adventure.
