Description

Kayak Through a Lock at St. Anthony Falls – Minneapolis, MN

Minneapolis owes its existence to a waterfall. And on this 2-hour guided kayak tour, you'll paddle right up to it — and then ride an elevator through the lock that tamed it.

The Unlocking the Falls tour launches from a put-in within walking distance of downtown Minneapolis and heads briefly upriver into the historic cradle of the city. Your paddling effort is rewarded quickly: near the end of the upstream leg, you'll enter the chamber of the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock, where the water slowly lifts you up through the lock — a one-of-a-kind experience that puts you at the center of one of the city's most remarkable pieces of engineering.

From there, you'll have time to explore the area under the Stone Arch Bridge — a 2,100-foot (640 m) span of granite and limestone built in 1883 by railroad magnate James J. Hill, and the only arched stone bridge on the entire Mississippi River. Nearby, the ruins of the old flour milling district rise from the riverbank, remnants of the era when Minneapolis was the flour milling capital of the world and the power of St. Anthony Falls — the only naturally occurring waterfall on the Mississippi — drove an entire industrial economy.

On the return downstream, the current carries you back past stellar views of the city skyline before finishing at the put-in. Your guide will share the history and folklore woven into every bend of this short but extraordinarily rich stretch of river.

At 2 hours and launching steps from downtown, this is an ideal tour for visitors who want to see Minneapolis from the water without a long time commitment — and for anyone who wants to experience one of the most unique kayaking moments available anywhere in the city.

FAQs

What is the Unlocking the Falls tour route?

The tour launches near downtown Minneapolis and heads briefly upriver toward the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam. You'll ride up through the lock, then explore the water under the Stone Arch Bridge and the ruins of the old flour milling district before returning downstream to the put-in. The whole route is a round trip — no shuttle needed.

What is the lock experience like?

After paddling into the lock chamber, the water level slowly rises around you, lifting your kayak up to the higher pool above. It's a slow, quiet, and surprisingly dramatic experience — like riding an elevator on the river. Your guide will walk you through what to expect before you enter.

What is St. Anthony Falls, and why does it matter?

St. Anthony Falls — known as Owámniyomni in the Dakota language — is the only naturally occurring waterfall on the entire Mississippi River. It's the geographical reason Minneapolis exists: the power of the falls drove the lumber and flour milling industries that built the city in the 19th century. At its peak, Minneapolis was the flour milling capital of the world. The falls, the lock, the Stone Arch Bridge, and the mill ruins are all visible on this tour.

What is the Stone Arch Bridge?

The Stone Arch Bridge is a 2,100-foot (640 m) span of granite and limestone built in 1882–1883 by railroad baron James J. Hill. It's the only arched stone bridge on the entire Mississippi River, and one of the most photographed landmarks in Minneapolis. Paddling directly beneath it is one of the highlights of this tour.

Is this tour suitable for beginners and families?

Yes — this is one of the most accessible tours offered. The route is short, the pace is relaxed, and children age 5 and up are welcome in tandem kayaks with an adult paddler 18 or older. The lock passage adds a unique element that tends to be a big hit with kids and first-timers alike.

Will photos be taken during the tour?

Yes! Your guide carries a waterproof camera and will take photos of your group during the paddle. You're also welcome to bring your own waterproof camera. A dry bag and cell phone cases are provided for items you want to keep close but protected from the water.

What is your season length?

We start guide training at the end of April and offer tours from May through mid-October, weather and river conditions permitting.

What if the weather turns bad?

The route and duration of all our tours are subject to flexibility depending on weather conditions, water level, flow rate, and group dynamics. Our guides take all of these elements into account to make everyone’s experience enjoyable and safe. We will be in communication at least 24 hours before a trip if we foresee needing to adjust, reschedule, or cancel.

Do your guides accept tips?

Our guides always appreciate tips. Guests typically do 15-20%. Cash is generally easiest and many guides also accept e-payment methods like Venmo or PayPal.

Are your guides certified?

Your guides are all certified by the American Canoe Association (ACA), trained in water rescue and first aid, and bring years of experience leading paddlers of all abilities on the Mississippi. Founded in 2018, this locally owned guide collective is deeply passionate about the river, its ecology, and its history — and that shows in every stroke.

Cancellation Policy

Guests must notify staff within 12 hours of trip to be offered a full refund. All of our trips follow weather safety guidelines, so if cancellation is due to weather concerns, we will offer to either refund or rebook.
