Tucson Hiking and Backpacking Trips

The hiking and backpacking opportunities in Arizona abound with diversity of scenery and natural attractions. Alongside being home to a huge range of environments and terrain, Arizona offers a nearly unparalleled ability to escape into wilderness settings. There’s the Sonoran Desert as exemplified in Saguaro National Park, Alpine environmental such as the high reaches of the Catalinas and White Mountains. Then of course there’s the incomparable Grand Canyon, home of some of the deepest backcountry in the lower 48. We invite you to explore these incredible wilderness settings with the confidence and expertise offered by guides who know this terrain well and possess the skills to turn an excursion into a wild environment into a comfortable learning process.

Hiking and Backpacking with Arizona Climbing Guides

We provide private guided hiking and backpacking trips into some of the most unique environments in Arizona. Below are options that we cover though we work with our clients to select the most appropriate trip based on weather, season and guest ability levels. 

Catalina Day Hikes

The hiking available right outside of Tucson Arizona is outstanding! Choose from easy hikes to stunning waterfalls in Sabino Canyon Recreation Area, or go on a long mountain adventure to the top of one of the many area peaks. Half and full day hikes are available.

Wilderness of Rock Backpacking

Located high in the Catalina Mountains sits a large plateau known as Wilderness of Rock. This landscape is covered in bizarre rock formations of every shape, size, and variety. The pine forest below the rocks provides great camping. This journey involves one night out, and a 13 mile loop hike.

Aravaipa Canyon Backpacking

Aravaipa is an otherworldly place located in remote Southeast Arizona. Surrounded by deep wilderness on all sides, this canyon is teaming with wildlife of every vriety to be found in the Sonoran desert. It is a lush riparian zone, guarded by monolithic walls of volcanic rock. Much of the hiking is done in the creek itself! Come experience the wonder of Aravaipa on this amazing backpacking adventure!  The options are as follows:
3 Day East to West
Explore the entirety of the main gorge, as well as two side canyons. This stay is 2 nights.
What to Expect
This trip involves about 19 miles of moderately strenuous hiking. There will likely be animal sightings and encounters. Be prepared to carry up to 40 pounds in a backpack. Bring footwear that drains water and neoprene socks. A packing list is provided with your booking.
  1. These trips would consist of a 2 night and 3 day option, or a 1 night two day east to east option.
  2. You will hike the main drainage, camp at locations near tributary canyons, and take short day hikes up into the side drainages.
  3. These trips are offered year round with one trip per month January-February, and two per month the rest of the year.
  4. Trips have a maximum participant limit of 6 and one guide per trip.
  5. Leave No Trace ethics will be used throughout the trip. Guides hold Leave No Trace, Food handler, and Medical certification. We hold a permit with Safford BLM.
