Description
Guided Canyoneering at Tanque Verde Falls — Tucson, Arizona
Tucked into the canyon country of Redington Pass on Tucson's far northeast side, Tanque Verde Canyon offers one of the most accessible and rewarding introductions to canyoneering anywhere in the Southwest. The canyon cuts through the banded gneiss and granite of the Rincon Mountains, creating a dramatic series of seasonal waterfalls, polished swimming holes, and sculpted canyon walls — all within a short drive of downtown Tucson.
This half-day guided trip is designed as a perfect first canyoneering experience. Four rappels take you through the heart of the canyon, with the tallest dropping 90 ft (27 m) alongside flowing waterfalls when water is running. The route covers approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) with a 400 ft (122 m) elevation gain on the return hike — demanding enough to feel like a real adventure, manageable enough to be genuinely beginner friendly. No prior canyoneering or rappelling experience is needed. Your AMGA-certified guide provides all instruction and manages every technical system throughout the day.
Duration
3-5 hours long

What to Bring / Wear
This is a canyon and waterfall experience — the terrain can be wet and the rocks are slippery. Footwear choice matters.
- Sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes with excellent grip — trail runners or approach shoes that drain quickly are ideal for creek crossings; avoid smooth-soled shoes

- Light layers — a fleece or lightweight jacket for cool mornings; the canyon warms up as the sun rises
- Sun protection: wide-brimmed hat, UV sunglasses, SPF 30+ sunscreen, and/or long-sleeve sun shirt
- Water — minimum 2 liters (68 oz) per person
- Snacks
- Small daypack (guide may have one if needed)
- Personal medications — including any emergency medications (epi-pen, inhaler, etc.); let your guide know

FAQs
Do I need prior experience for this canyoneering trip?
Not at all — this trip is specifically designed as an introduction to canyoneering. Your guide will walk you through every step before you leave the ground, including how to wear your harness, how to operate the rappel device, and how to descend safely. By the end of the trip you'll have completed four real rappels in a genuine desert canyon.
What are the four rappels like?
The rappels progress in size through the canyon, with the tallest drop coming in at 90 ft (27 m) — a long, exciting descent alongside a waterfall when water is flowing. Your guide sets up all anchor systems and talks you through each descent individually. The route does not require swimming, though you may encounter shallow water crossings and wet rock surfaces depending on the season.
Will we get wet?
The canyon often has running water, particularly in cooler months following rainfall. You may cross shallow sections of the creek and encounter wet rocks on and around the rappels. You won't be required to swim, but expect your feet to get wet. Quick-drying footwear is strongly recommended. In warmer, drier conditions the water levels are typically lower.
When is the best time to visit for flowing waterfalls?
Tanque Verde Creek flows after rainfall — winter rains (December–March) and the summer monsoons (July–September) are the main water sources. Fall and spring trips after recent rain offer the best chance of flowing waterfalls. Note that the guided season runs October through May; tours are not available June through September due to extreme desert heat.
Is this trip available year-round?
No — tours run October through May. Trips are not offered June through September due to heat. The canyon is located at lower elevation than the Mt. Lemmon canyoneering routes and temperatures can become dangerously high in summer months. Both morning and afternoon start times are available during the operating season, 7 days a week including holidays.
How far is Tanque Verde Falls from downtown Tucson?
The trailhead is approximately 20 miles (32 km) from downtown Tucson — about a 30–40 minute drive east on Tanque Verde Road, which transitions to Redington Road. The last section of road before the trailhead is unpaved dirt but passable for most passenger vehicles.
Is there a fee to access Tanque Verde Falls?
No — access to Tanque Verde Falls via the Coronado National Forest trailhead is free. There is no entrance fee or day use fee, and parking is free.
