Description

Take Your First Breath Underwater on a Real Maui Reef!

You don't need a scuba certification—or any previous diving experience—to discover what Maui looks like beneath the surface. This beginner scuba experience is designed specifically for first-time divers, giving you the chance to learn the basics and complete a real ocean dive on a West Maui reef under the close supervision of an experienced instructor.

Your adventure begins on land, where you'll learn how the scuba equipment works, what it feels like to breathe through a regulator, and the basic skills and safety procedures you'll need underwater. Then you'll head directly into the ocean from a West Maui beach, taking things one step at a time until you're comfortable breathing, moving, and exploring beneath the surface. Your instructor stays close throughout the experience, allowing the dive to progress at a pace that feels right for you.

Then comes the part you'll remember: your first real breaths underwater. Once you're comfortable, you'll leave the shallows behind and explore Maui's reef, surrounded by tropical fish, coral formations, and other marine life. Keep watch for Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu), moray eels, octopus, and the countless smaller creatures hiding among the reef. Wildlife sightings vary, but experiencing an entire underwater world for the first time is the real highlight.

This isn't a scuba certification course—it's an opportunity to try scuba diving before deciding whether you want to pursue certification. And if one dive isn't enough, a second dive can be added the same day, giving you another chance to get comfortable, explore farther, and enjoy that incredible feeling of weightlessness beneath the Pacific.

Itinerary

  1. Get to know your instructor and the rest of your group at the meeting point.
  2. Short safety rundown, we keep this nice and simple for your first dive
  3. Get familiarized with your gear
  4. Go over 3 basic problem solving skills
  5. Walk 75 yards (68.5 m) down to the water with your gear
  6. Enter the water and float while you put your fins and mask on
  7. Practice getting comfortable breathing through your regulator in and out of the water
  8. Practice the 3 problem solving skills at the surface
  9. Descend into very shallow water and experience breathing underwater
  10. Learn how to clear water out of your regulator and mask and locate your regulator no matter where it goes
  11. Enjoy swimming underwater and exploring Maui’s beautiful coral reefs

Duration

  1. 2 Hours Total
  2. Bottom time: up to 60 minutes (1 hour) per tank
  3. There is the option to add on a second tank for a second dive for an extra fee at checkout. That will extend the time to 3 to 4 hours total.

Location / Where to Meet

  1. You will be sent a meeting location the day before your dive (feel free to reach out if you want more details before then).
  2. Meet your dive instructor at the meeting location at the scheduled time of your dive. There is no need to be early.
  3. Guests should be prepared to carry gear approximately 30 yards (27.4 m) from parking to the water, your guide is there to help!

Ages & Requirements

  2. No scuba certification is required for this Discover scuba dive, this is for guests to try scuba diving for their first time!
  3. All guests must complete the PADI/DAN Diver Medical Questionnaire before participating in the dive. Depending on your answers, the form may require you to receive medical clearance and a signature from a physician before diving. We strongly recommend completing the questionnaire as soon as possible after booking so you have plenty of time to obtain medical clearance if needed. If the questionnaire requires physician approval, you will not be permitted to dive without the completed medical clearance. Because this is a required safety measure, refunds cannot be provided if you are unable to participate because the questionnaire was not completed or required medical clearance was not obtained in time.
  4. Guests must be comfortable swimming unassisted in the ocean, if not, you must book a private session.
  5. This is a shore-entry dive with no boat component.
  6. Guests carry their own gear roughly 30 yards (27.4 m) to the water, your guide can assist as needed.

  9. There is a maximum of 4 divers to 1 guide. There is the option for certified divers to tag along if you have group members who would like to see your discover dive.
  10. No on can exceed an altitude of 1,000 ft (305 m) or higher for 18 hours after scuba diving or 24 hours for multiple dives. For example, you must avoid ascending Haleakala, zip-lining and helicopter tours for up to 18 hours minimum.

Yes, we need 2 days advance notice.

Can I get nitrox? What blend Nitrox do you have? What percentage is the Nitrox?

Yes, we need 1 day advance notice. Nitrox blend is 32%

Would you recommend steel tanks (“100’s”) since I tend to go through my air fast?

It depends on your dimensions (height and weight) if it will be beneficial for you. If you are over 210 lbs we recommend steel tanks. Also known as “100’s”

Can I go to Hana the day after I dive?

Yes, there is no elevation gain to worry about.

Can I drive up to Haleakala (volcano)?

No, wait 18 – 24 hours before ascending to altitude.

Any activity that brings you above 1000 ft (305 m) can trigger the Bends/Decompression Sickness. Please check your hike elevation to ensure that at no time you will be going up in elevation. If the hike does go to elevation, you must treat it like a preflight interval as listed above in the flying FAQ.

Can I fly after diving?

Flying directly after scuba diving is incredibly dangerous and could result in a life-threatening illness called the Bends/Decompression Sickness. The Divers Alert Network (DAN) guidelines for flying after diving include:

  • A single no-decompression dive, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000 ft (305 m) interval of 18 hours suggested.
  • Multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000ft (305m) interval of 24 hours is suggested.
  • Dives requiring decompression stops are recommended to have longer than 18 hours.

Please discuss with your dive guide ahead of time what is suggested!

I have my own regulator can I just rent the BCD?

Yes; when you make your reservation you can select which add-ons are right for you: you can either rent a Full Set of dive gear or by the piece.

As of 2021 we are providing any gear rental you need for no extra charge.

Yes, you need to show your scuba certification card at check in in order to participate in our Maui diving excursion. Proof of certification is accepted, for example, if the office has verified you or you have a Dive Check through PADI.

Can I bring my own tanks? Is there a discount if I do?

Yes, you can bring your own tanks. There is no discount as tanks do not cost extra, they are included.

Can I use all of my own equipment?

Yes, and you do need a computer on for boat dives.
