Description

Teen/Youth Raft Guide Camp and River Safety Training on the Trinity River

If you’re a teenager (ages 11-18) interested in learning the basics of guiding a raft and river rescue/safety techniques, this camp is for you! Most of your time will be spent on the river practicing whitewater river skills, but we’ll have an outdoor “classroom” component each morning, too. You’ll learn about:
  1. Rigging a raft
  2. Steering a raft with a paddle
  3. Using your crew to maneuver a raft
  4. Reading the river
  5. Lines for rapids
  6. Eddies
  7. Getting unstuck
  8. Flipping a raft back over
  9. Hand signals
  10. Rescue rope bags
  11. Self-rescue and rescuing others
  12. Safety and paddle talks
During this non-competitive five-day class, you’ll mostly be paddling on Class II sections of the upper Trinity River between Big Flat and Cedar Flat; but you’ll also spend a day on the Class III+ Pigeon Point section.
You’ll have the option to stay with your classmates at a USFS group campsite at Skunk Point with a parent or responsible adult (or arrange your own accommodation and transportation to/from the campsite each day). You’ll get picked up by your instructor each morning at 9:30am and arrive back at camp around 4pm. Your parents are welcome to book rafting trips with Six Rivers Rafting during the days, go hiking in the Trinity Alps, or just relax by the river.

FAQs

What is the teacher-to-student ratio for this class?

1:4

What is the maximum number of students for this class?

We cap the class at 15 students.

How much rafting experience does my child need to take this class?

No prior river or kayaking experience is required to attend Youth Guide Camp! Our program is designed with beginners in mind, and our instructors provide a safe and supportive environment for learning. That said, the experience is best suited for kids who are already comfortable in the water, as we’ll spend plenty of time swimming, paddling, and playing in the river.

What is your weather policy?

The weather would have to be pretty bad to cancel this camp! E.g., we’d cancel if there were a wildfire and/or air quality/safety issues.

Are there scholarships available?

Yes! We offer two scholarship spots each year for our Guide School. These scholarships are intended to support individuals from low-income or Native backgrounds who are passionate about learning to guide rivers. If you're interested, simply send us an email sharing a bit about yourself and why you're applying—we’d love to hear your story.

What safety training do your guides have?

All of the guides at Six Rivers Rafting are thoroughly trained and have a river or swiftwater rescue cert, an advanced first aid cert (usually of the wilderness variety), and a CPR cert. Guides have also completed a guide training/school and have proved proficient on all sections of the river they are taking clients on. The experience level of our guide team ranges from well over 20 years to first-year rock stars. Our guides tend to come back and work for us for many years, providing a wealth of experience and stability to our operation. All of our guides are also knowledgeable when it comes to river ecology and the surrounding wildlife. They passionately share information about local species, landmarks, and conservation issues in a friendly and interesting way.

How do you manage your environmental impact?

We make many efforts to reduce our waste. Food is packaged in reusable containers and served with real plates and silverware. Reusable water bottles allow us to hydrate without creating waste. Leftover food is turned into compost. All other waste is either recycled or reused at the owner’s house. (Plastic Ziploc bags can be cleaned and used over and over!)

What kind of involvement do you have in the local community?

We are locally owned. As an active member in our community, we enjoy donating rafting gift certificates to local charities for their fundraising efforts. We love seeing our gift certificates generate income for the local Creekside Charter School and the Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka! Plus, we get the added benefit of later enjoying the company of the gift certificate recipients!

Cancellation Policy
