Description

Tonsina Trek & Tap – Guided Nature Hike in Resurrection Bay

This is one of the most relaxed and charming outings in the Seward area — a guided afternoon adventure that combines a scenic 15-minute water taxi ride across Resurrection Bay, a beautiful and easy 2-mile (3.2 km) nature hike through old-growth Chugach temperate rainforest, and a post-hike drink at the on-site café with your guide. Just good company, great scenery, and a cold beer (or coffee, or cider) waiting for you at the end.

The water taxi drops you at Tonsina Point, where the hike begins through a forest of Sitka spruce draped in thick pillows of moss and lichen — the kind of lush, ancient-feeling forest that makes coastal Alaska feel like another world entirely. Along the way, your guide points out the eerie ghost forest along the shore, where silver-grey tree trunks still stand from the catastrophic 1964 Alaska earthquake that submerged the coastline and killed the trees where they grew. In summer, Tonsina Creek fills with colorful spawning salmon as bald eagles gather in the trees above, watching and waiting. In fall, the berries ripen along the trail. In spring, black bears occasionally make an appearance near the forest edge.

The hike back to Miller's Landing covers approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) with a couple of switchbacks on the return climb — easy going for most, with scenic bay views rewarding every uphill step. Once back at base, your guide joins the group for a drink at the café, which is stocked with Alaskan beers, wine, cider, coffee, tea, and non-alcoholic options. Snacks are also provided for the group at the end of the tour.

With a single 2 p.m. departure returning around 4 p.m., this is a perfect way to spend a Seward afternoon — especially if you've already done a bigger adventure in the morning and want something scenic and social to round out the day.

Duration

Approximately 2 hours total. Departs 2 p.m.; returns approximately 4 p.m.

Please arrive 15–30 minutes before departure to check in and meet your guide. The water taxi waits for no one — please be on time.

FAQs

Is this trip good for beginners, kids, and non-kayakers?

Absolutely — this is one of the most accessible outings available and requires no kayaking experience whatsoever. The hike is easy and suitable for ages 8 and up. It's a fantastic option for families, those who prefer hiking to paddling, or anyone wanting a relaxed and social afternoon in the outdoors.

What does the "Tap" part of the adventure mean?

After the hike back to Miller's Landing, your guide joins the group for a drink at the on-site café. The café serves a rotating selection of Alaskan beers, wine, cider, coffee, tea, and non-alcoholic drinks. Snacks are also included. It's a genuinely social finish to a genuinely enjoyable afternoon.

What is the ghost forest and why is it worth seeing?

During the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake — the second most powerful ever recorded — the coastline along Resurrection Bay subsided, flooding the root systems of large stands of Sitka spruce. The trees died standing, and their pale, barkless trunks still line the shore today — an eerie and striking reminder of one of Alaska's most dramatic geological events. Your guide brings the history to life on the trail.

What wildlife might we see?

Bald eagles are a near-constant presence along this stretch of coastline, particularly in summer and fall when salmon are spawning in Tonsina Creek. Harbor seals and sea lions are regularly spotted from the water taxi. In season, watch for spawning salmon in the creek and berry-laden bushes along the trail. Black bears are occasionally seen near the forest edge in early spring, though sightings become increasingly rare as summer progresses.

How long is the water taxi ride?

The water taxi ride to Tonsina Point takes approximately 15 minutes each way. Keep an eye out for wildlife on the crossing — whale and porpoise sightings are possible.

How muddy does the trail get?

The trail through the Chugach temperate rainforest can be muddy, particularly after rain. Waterproof or water-resistant footwear is recommended. The hike includes a couple of switchbacks on the return section but is overall an easy and manageable trail.
