The Hook is a small peninsula and protected launch site on the west end of Hood River’s waterfront. It’s one of the most popular spots in the Columbia River Gorge for paddling, windsurfing, and kiteboarding. The protected cove makes it beginner-friendly, while its location gives you easy access to Wells Island, a favorite paddling destination just offshore.

Wells Island is a small island located just a short paddle from The Hook. It’s one of the best destinations for kayakers and paddleboarders in Hood River, offering calm waters around its shoreline and incredible views of the Columbia Gorge. Many of our guests make Wells Island their first stop when renting a kayak or SUP.

For most paddlers, a full loop around the island takes about 30–45 minutes, depending on your pace and the river conditions. If you plan to stop for photos, wildlife viewing, or just to relax along the shoreline, you might spend closer to 1-2 hours. The protected waters near The Hook make it easy to enjoy a calm, scenic paddle without feeling rushed.

Beyond Wells Island, the Columbia River Gorge offers plenty of great paddling options. From The Hook, you can explore:

• West Columbia Gorge shoreline – Calm waters and scenic riverbanks ideal for SUP or a relaxing solo kayak paddle.

No prior experience is required. The launch area at The Hook is protected, making it an accessible starting point for beginners. Our staff will provide you with all the gear you need so you feel comfortable getting out on the water.

Paddling from The Hook is beginner-friendly, especially in the protected cove near the launch. That said, the Columbia River can be windy, and conditions change quickly. Always wear your life jacket, stay aware of your surroundings, and avoid going too far into the main channel if you’re new to paddling.

Reservations are highly recommended, especially on busy summer days.

Yes! Kayaking is a great family activity. Kids can paddle their own board or kayak if they’re strong swimmers, or join an adult in a tandem kayak. Life jackets are required for all participants.
