Description
Poipu Tandem E-Bike Rental — Ride Together Through Kauai's South Shore
Some experiences are better shared — and riding together through Kauai's most stunning coastline on a single electric tandem bike is one of them. The Pedego Tandem is a purpose-built electric bike for two riders: one pilots in front and steers, the other pedals along in back and takes in every view unobstructed. The motor powers both riders together, making the south shore's rolling roads between Poipu's beaches completely effortless from front to back.
It's a genuinely fun and different way to see the island. You're moving together through the same scenery, talking the whole way, stopping at the same moments — the Spouting Horn, the honu on the beach at Poipu, the cliff views above Shipwreck Beach — rather than riding separately and meeting at each stop. Staff will get both riders fitted and comfortable in the parking lot before you head out, and the south shore's routes are equally beautiful on two wheels or four.
Duration
Available in 2-hour, half-day (4 hours), and full-day (8 hours) rentals (ages 12+), or book by the day from 2–6 days, or weekly (7 days).
For multi-day rentals, a charger is included — charge overnight at your accommodation for a full battery every morning.

FAQs
How does the Pedego Tandem work?
The pilot sits in front and controls everything — steering, braking, and the pedal-assist level. The stoker sits in the rear, pedals along, and enjoys the ride without any steering responsibility. The motor assists both riders simultaneously, making the hills between Poipu's beaches completely effortless from front to back. Communication is the key — the pilot calls out stops, turns, and starts so both riders move in sync. Most couples and pairs feel comfortable within the first few minutes in the parking lot.
Do both riders need to know how to ride a bike?
The pilot needs to be a confident cyclist — they are steering and controlling the bike. The stoker only needs to be able to pedal and balance on a moving bike, making it more accessible than individual riding for less confident cyclists.
Where can we ride from the shop?
The shop is in the heart of Kauai's south shore, giving you direct access to several excellent routes:
Poipu Beach to Spouting Horn (4 miles / 6.4 km round trip): The most popular short ride — head west along Poipu Road and Lawaʻi Road to the Spouting Horn blowhole, one of Kauai's most iconic natural landmarks. The blowhole shoots water up to 50 feet in the air when swells push through the lava tube below. Poipu Beach — with its resident sea turtles and snorkeling — is minutes from the shop in the other direction.
Koloa Heritage Trail (10 miles / 16 km loop): A self-guided loop connecting 14 historic and cultural sites across the south shore — including Spouting Horn Park, the site of Hawaii's first sugar mill in Old Koloa Town, plantation-era landmarks, ancient Hawaiian heiau (temples), and several beach access points. Each stop is marked with descriptive plaques. A half-day rental covers this comfortably with stops.
Shipwreck Beach and the coastal road: Follow the road east from Poipu to Shipwreck Beach — a dramatic cove at the base of the cliffs below the Grand Hyatt, famous for its bodysurfers and cliff jumpers. The coastal road continues past Poipu Golf Course to additional viewpoints and the trailhead for the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail (a hiking trail along the cliffs, best explored on foot after locking up your bike).
Old Koloa Town (about 1.5 miles / 2.4 km inland): The historic heart of Kauai's south shore — the site of Hawaii's first prosperous sugar mill, with a charming main street of local shops, restaurants, and the Sugar Monument commemorating the plantation era.
Is this good for couples or friends?
The tandem is ideal for two people who want to share the experience rather than ride separately. The pilot and stoker are physically close throughout the ride — it's a genuinely connected way to explore the island together. Multiple reviewers specifically call out the tandem as a highlight of their Kauai trip.
How does charging work for multi-day rentals?
A charger is included. Plug in at your accommodation each evening — a full charge takes approximately 4–6 hours.
What is a Pedego electric bike and how does it work?
Pedego electric bikes use a pedal-assist system — as you pedal, the motor kicks in to amplify your effort. You can dial the assist level up or down depending on how much help you want. Most models also have a throttle. On Kauai's rolling south shore roads, that assistance makes the hills between Poipu's beaches effortless — so you can stop, explore, and take in every view without worrying about the ride back.
How far can I go on a single charge?
Most Pedego bikes are rated for 20–60 miles (32–97 km) per charge. The Koloa Heritage Trail loop is approximately 10 miles (16 km); the Spouting Horn to Shipwreck Beach coastal route is about 10.7 miles (17.2 km) one way. A full day of south shore exploring is well within range on a single charge.
Do I need experience riding a bicycle to rent an e-bike?
You must be able to ride a bicycle independently before renting. Staff will fit your bike and walk you through the controls before you head out. Reviewers consistently describe the orientation as patient, thorough, and friendly.
Are helmets required?
Hawaii state law requires riders under 16 to wear a helmet. Helmets are included with every rental and are strongly recommended for all riders.
Do I need to be physically fit?
Kauai's south shore roads are gently rolling — not flat like some coastal locations. The e-bike's pedal-assist makes the hills very manageable for all fitness levels. For the regular pedal bike rental, a basic level of cycling fitness is recommended given the rolling terrain.
What is the weather policy?
Kauai's south shore is the sunniest part of the island and has excellent weather year-round. Rentals go forward in all but severe weather. Contact the shop if unusual conditions are forecast.
Is parking available at the shop?
Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak season (December through April and June through August). The shop is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 AM–3:00 PM; closed Monday.
Are sea turtles guaranteed at Poipu Beach?
Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) are regularly seen resting on the beach at Poipu Beach Park — it's one of the best spots in Hawaii to see them. They are a protected species; you must remain at least 10 feet (3 m) away and never touch or disturb them. The shop staff can tell you the best time of day for turtle sightings on your visit.
Is reef-safe sunscreen required?
Hawaii law prohibits the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, which damage coral reefs. Reef-safe sunscreen is strongly recommended and widely available in Koloa and Poipu shops. Better yet, wear a sun shirt — the south shore sun is intense year-round.
