Description

Tandem E-Bike Rental — Ride the Pinellas Trail Together

Some rides are better shared. The Pedego Tandem is a purpose-built electric tandem bike for two riders — one up front steering, one in the rear pedaling — both moving together along the Pinellas Trail with a single motor doing the heavy lifting for both of you. It's a genuinely different way to ride: you stay side by side in conversation the whole way, cover as much ground as you would on two individual bikes, and arrive at Honeymoon Island or the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks having shared every mile of it.

The Pedego Tandem is popular with couples, close friends, and anyone who wants a shared experience rather than two people riding separately and occasionally waiting for each other. The flat, wide Pinellas Trail is ideal for tandem riding — no hills to negotiate together, no traffic to manage, just 45 miles (72 km) of paved path in every direction from the shop door.

Duration

  • 4 hours — A comfortable ride to Honeymoon Island and back, or a Dunedin exploration loop
  • 8 hours — Ride to Tarpon Springs for lunch at the Sponge Docks and return together
  • 24 hours — A full day and morning of riding; charge overnight at your accommodation

FAQs

How does riding a tandem e-bike work?

On a tandem, the front rider (the pilot) steers, brakes, and controls the motor and pedal-assist levels. The rear rider (the stoker) simply pedals — they have no steering input and no brakes. Both riders pedal together, and the electric motor amplifies the combined effort. The key is communication: the pilot calls out stops, turns, and starts so both riders move in sync. It sounds more complicated than it is — most riders feel comfortable within the first few minutes of practice in the parking lot.

Do both riders need to know how to ride a bike?

The front rider (pilot) absolutely needs to be a confident cyclist — they are steering and controlling the bike. The rear rider (stoker) needs to be able to pedal and maintain balance but doesn't steer, making it slightly more accessible than individual riding. That said, both riders should be comfortable on a bicycle before booking.

Is the tandem suitable for riders of different heights or fitness levels?

Yes — the seats are independently adjustable and the motor handles the effort for both riders. The tandem is an excellent option when one rider is stronger than the other, since the motor levels the experience. Seat height will be adjusted individually at check-in.

Is the Pinellas Trail wide enough for a tandem?

Yes — the trail is 15 feet (4.6 m) wide throughout, making it very comfortable for tandem riding. Be aware that the trail can be busy near downtown Dunedin and popular trailheads, especially on weekends — keep to the right and pass on the left as with any multi-use path.

What is a Pedego electric bike and how does it work?

Pedego electric bikes use a pedal-assist system — as you pedal, the motor kicks in to amplify your effort. You can dial the assist level up or down depending on how much help you want, and most models also have a throttle for effortless cruising whenever you like. On the flat, sun-soaked Pinellas Trail, the result is pure Florida fun — you can cruise farther than you'd ever ride on a regular bike, arrive at the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs without breaking a sweat, and still have energy to explore when you get there.

How far can I go on a single charge?

Most Pedego bikes are rated for 20–60 miles (32–97 km) per charge. The Dunedin to Tarpon Springs round trip is approximately 24 miles (39 km) — well within range. Riders who added a side trip to Honeymoon Island on the same outing report returning with battery to spare.

Do I need experience riding a bicycle to rent an e-bike?

You must be able to ride a bicycle independently before renting. Staff will walk you through a thorough tutorial, have you practice in the parking lot, and ensure you feel confident before you head out — multiple reviewers specifically praise the patience and thoroughness of the pre-ride orientation.

Are helmets required?

Florida state law does not require helmets for adult e-bike riders. Helmets are included with every rental and are strongly recommended. Riders under 16 are required by Florida law to wear a helmet.

Do I need to be physically fit?

Not at all. The Pinellas Trail is predominantly flat — it follows a former railroad bed through Pinellas County with virtually no elevation change. The e-bike's pedal-assist makes the riding effortless for all fitness levels. Reviewers in their 60s and 70s consistently describe covering 20+ miles without difficulty.

What is the weather policy?

Florida's weather is generally excellent for year-round riding, but summers are hot and humid. Morning start times are strongly recommended from June through September. The Pinellas Trail has limited shade on some sections — extra water is essential in warm months. Rentals go forward in all but severe weather. Contact the shop directly if a storm is in the forecast on your rental day.

What happens if I get a flat tire or the bike has a mechanical issue?

Contact the shop directly. Lock bikes securely whenever you stop at a restaurant or attraction along the trail.

Can I bring my camera or phone?

Absolutely. The Dunedin Causeway to Honeymoon Island, the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, and the Gulf views from the trail offer excellent photography throughout. The shop is not responsible for lost or damaged items.

Is parking available at the shop?

Yes — free on-site parking at 924 Curlew Rd. The shop is right off the Pinellas Trail at Curlew Road, also the start of the spur to Honeymoon Island.

Do I need to book in advance?

Booking in advance is recommended, especially for multi-day rentals and peak season weekends (October through April). Walk-ins are welcomed based on availability. The shop is open daily, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM.

What time does the shop open and close?

Daily, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. All bikes must be returned by 5:00 PM unless on a multi-day rental.

Where can I ride from the shop?

The shop sits directly on the Pinellas Trail at Curlew Road, with three great directions to explore:

West — Honeymoon Island (4 miles / 6.4 km each way): The Dunedin Causeway spur runs west from Curlew Road along the Causeway to Honeymoon Island State Park — one of Florida's most popular state parks, with 4 miles of beaches, a nature trail, and a ferry to Caladesi Island. The ride along the Causeway offers panoramic views of St. Joseph Sound and the Gulf beyond. Allow 1.5–2 hours for a relaxed out-and-back with time at the beach.

North — Tarpon Springs and the Sponge Docks (12 miles / 19 km each way): Head north on the Pinellas Trail through Palm Harbor and Wall Springs County Park to Tarpon Springs — a historic Greek-American community famous for its working sponge diving industry. The Sponge Docks district on the Anclote River has waterfront restaurants, sponge shops, and Greek bakeries. The round trip is approximately 24 miles (39 km) — comfortable on an 8-hour rental at a relaxed pace with a lunch stop.

South — Downtown Dunedin and Clearwater (6 miles / 10 km to Clearwater): Head south through downtown Dunedin's charming Main Street, past Weaver Park and along the waterfront, continuing south toward Clearwater's downtown and the Courtney Campbell Causeway trail connection.

Is the Pinellas Trail flat?

Yes — the trail follows a former railroad bed and is essentially flat throughout. There are 10 overpasses over busy streets and a few gentle hills between Miles 37 and 40 near Tarpon Springs, but the overall character is flat, wide, and easy. The Pinellas Trail is 15 feet (4.6 m) wide and paved with asphalt throughout.

Is Honeymoon Island State Park entry included?

No — Honeymoon Island State Park charges a per-person entry fee for cyclists and pedestrians (currently $4 per person; confirm at the park entrance). The fee is not included in the rental.

Is parking free at the shop?

Yes — free on-site parking at 924 Curlew Rd.

How does a 24-hour or multi-day rental work?

The bike goes with you. A charger is included — plug in at your accommodation each evening for a full battery every morning. Return the bike by 5:00 PM on your final rental day.
