After your underground river experience, continue with moderate-to-semi-intense forest hiking through the Northern Karst region. You will find the Caguana Ceremonial Indigenous Heritage Center on your left. Our Tourist Information Center is the building just in front of it and here at Km 48.7! You will meet with our tour guides there to check in.

Ages & Requirements

Minimum age for this tour is 6 years old, however, children participating in this tour should be active and used to doing physical activities, otherwise it could be exhausting for them.
All participants should be in good health and good (average) physical condition.
Our adventure tours are not suitable for people with severe conditions on the back, hip, knees, ankles, overweight, heart conditions or any physical or health condition that prevents them from doing these kinds of physical activities.
Pregnant women should not take part in our adventure tours.
People with recent surgeries should not take part in the tour.
This tour takes part mostly in the river and also in the forest, where you will hike through uneven, sometimes with loose or slippery rocks, uphill and downhill paths for a considerable amount of time.
Our weight limits are 250 lbs (113 kg) for men and 220 lbs (100 kg) for women. Weight should be proportional to height.
On this tour you will get completely wet. Participants should wear sneakers or close toed shoes with a good grip sole. Water shoes with a good grip sole should work well too.
Although we have received a lot of grandparents who have done the complete tour, we recommend that older people participating meet our physical requirements and are used to doing physical activities.
Participants will not be allowed to do our tours on flip flops.

Swimsuit (Already On Under Clothing) & Towels
Reusable Water Bottle Filled w/ Water
Sturdy Hiking Shoes, Sneakers, or Water Shoes (NO Open-Toed Shoes or Flip Flops) - Broken in/Used before with closed toes and grippy tread! Crocs or flat sole shoes like Vans are NOT recommended.
Hiking Socks & Gaiters - Comfortable socks to prevent blisters and small shoe gaiters are helpful to keep rocks and sand from getting into the shoe and causing blisters or cuts!
Comfortable Clothing / Change of Clothing - Make sure the clothing is moisture-wicking, lightweight, and fast drying!
Sun & Insect Protection - Rimmed hat, sunglasses, neck covering (may attach to hat), and UV deflecting long sleeve shirts can all help to combat the harmful and strong sun rays! Don’t forget some insect repellent or mosquito head coverings!
Required Paperwork & ID Cards- Signed medical form if required, waivers, license, etc.
Restroom Essentials - Extra toilet paper and hand sanitizer is a good idea!
Trekking Poles - These can help on uneven ground or strenuous hikes!
Cameras & Binoculars - Catch amazing pictures of the scenery and binoculars to spot wildlife from far away! If you are river trekking or swimming, ensure you have a waterproof camera with a floating handle in case it gets dropped!
Dry Bags - Recommended anywhere you might get rained on to protect valuables like your phone and cameras.
Snacks - Please always consider bringing your own, especially if you have a food allergy, stomach issues to certain foods, or are particular about your food preferences!
Please remove any jewelry, watches, or anything that can get damaged by water, dirt, or anything you don’t want to lose.

What kind of wildlife might I see in the caves and along the river?

In the caves and along the Tanamá River, you can encounter freshwater shrimp, freshwater crabs, and small river fish. Bats often roost in the ceilings of Portillo Cave, particularly fruit-eating species and insectivorous bats, which help control local insect populations. Along the forested riverbanks, you may hear or see coquí frogs, native birds like the Puerto Rican tody and tanager species, and various small reptiles and lizards. In the pools and slow-moving sections of the river, freshwater snails and microinvertebrates are common, reflecting the area’s clean, oxygen-rich waters.

Are the caves historically significant?

Yes. The caves were used by Taíno people, Puerto Rico’s indigenous inhabitants, for centuries as shelters, ceremonial sites, and temporary river crossings. Some rock surfaces show natural formations that resemble symbols or markings used for orientation or ritual purposes. Archaeological studies in the Northern Karst region indicate that these river corridors were vital for transport, freshwater access, and subsistence activities, making the caves both culturally and historically meaningful.

What makes the Tanamá River and Northern Karst region unique?

The Northern Karst region is defined by limestone formations shaped by millions of years of water erosion, resulting in underground rivers, caves, and vertical canyons. Tanamá River is unusual because it flows through subterranean tunnels like Portillo Cave, emerges into open canyon sections with boulder-strewn riverbeds, and forms natural pools and waterfalls such as those at Cueva del Arco. This combination of underground rivers, limestone walls, and forested surroundings is rare, creating a complex ecosystem that supports endemic amphibians, fish, and plants while offering dramatic scenery unique to Puerto Rico.

Is the cave lit or do we use natural light?

Portillo Cave relies almost entirely on natural light entering from the cave entrance and small ceiling fissures. This soft illumination highlights the clarity of the river and the limestone formations, creating a magical underground atmosphere as you kayak through. Guides carry handheld LED lights or headlamps for safety in dimmer sections, but the experience is designed to let you enjoy the cave as nature intended—listening to the flowing water and spotting the freshwater wildlife without artificial interference.

Cancellation Policy

We understand that plans can change! To ensure we can manage our guides and equipment effectively, the following policy applies to all bookings:

48 Hours or More Notice: Cancellations made at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled tour departure time will receive a 100% full refund.
24 to 48 Hours Notice: Cancellations made between 24 and 48 hours prior to departure will receive a 50% refund.
Less than 24 Hours or No-Show: Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice, or no shows are non-refundable.

For cancellations made by operator due to unsafe weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances, you will be offered the choice of a full refund, a rescheduled date or a gift card with the credit.
