FAQs
What qualifications and certifications do your guides have?

What is the difference between Guajataca River Canyon and Tanama River Adventures?
Guajataca River Canyon: Focuses on a deep, narrow limestone canyon and includes extensive kayaking, bodyrafting, and river canyon exploration. The highlight is paddling through the second deepest canyon in Puerto Rico and experiencing its unique karst walls, abundant birdlife, and hidden springs. There’s also a combination of hiking and river trekking, but the primary activity is on the river.
Tanamá River Adventures: Emphasizes a mix of river trekking, caving, hiking, and optional free jumps. Visitors explore Mukaro Cave and Cueva del Arco, wade through shallower river sections, scramble over boulders, and swim in natural pools. While it also showcases Northern Karst landscapes, Tanamá is more about hands-on caving and hiking combined with river exploration, rather than extended kayaking through a canyon.
What kind of wildlife might I see along the Tanama River Canyon?
The Tanamá River Canyon is alive with both aquatic and forest wildlife. In the water, you may spot freshwater shrimp, crabs, small river fish, and even freshwater eels. Along the canyon walls and riverbanks, it’s common to see lizards, coquí frogs, and a wide range of insects like butterflies and dragonflies. The surrounding forest is also home to birds such as Puerto Rican todies, kingfishers, herons, hawks, and occasionally owls roosting in the caves. If you’re lucky, you might also glimpse bats flying in and out of the limestone caves at dusk or while exploring underground sections. The combination of river life, cave ecosystems, and dense subtropical forest makes the Tanamá Canyon a haven for biodiversity and a great place for wildlife observation.
What is special about the Tanama River Canyon?
The Tanamá River Canyon, located in Utuado, is one of Puerto Rico’s most stunning natural landscapes. It cuts through the Northern Karst region, where towering limestone cliffs, caves, and canyons have been carved out by water over millions of years. This canyon is filled with underground rivers, waterfalls, and hidden pools, making it one of the few places on the island where you can experience caving, canyoning, body rafting, and hiking all in one place. Unlike busier tourist spots, the Tanamá Canyon is remote and crowd-free, giving you a raw and immersive outdoor experience. Its unique mix of geology, history, and biodiversity makes it a hotspot for adventure lovers and nature enthusiasts.
How much of the adventure will I be in the water and how much will I be hiking?
This tour is designed to maximize water time while still including a solid amount of hiking. Expect to spend about 60–70% of the adventure in the water—tubing, swimming, body rafting, or crossing natural pools—and about 30–40% hiking along riverbanks, canyon walls, and forest trails. The hike sections are moderately challenging, with some steep slopes and rocky terrain, but they’re balanced with relaxing floats down calm stretches of the river. You’ll also pass through caves and canyons that require scrambling over rocks and wading through shallow water, so be prepared to stay active both in and out of the river. Optional cliff jumps and rappelling add-ons can increase the physical challenge if you’re looking for extra adrenaline.
