This surf lesson takes place at Kalama Beach Park in Kihei, prized for its gentle, rolling waves, wide surf area, and a forgiving, foot-friendly sandy bottom — exactly the kind of conditions that make catching your first wave feel achievable rather than intimidating.
Patient, experienced instructors walk you through the fundamentals on the beach before getting you out in the water, covering everything from paddling technique to popping up on the board. Kalama Beach Park is also one of the few county-permitted locations on Maui for surf instruction, so you're learning in a properly managed spot rather than somewhere makeshift. Between lessons, the park's shaded grassy area, cafés, and shops across the street make it easy for non-surfing family members to relax nearby.
