FAQs
What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?
Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.
Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’
Are there sharks?
Shark incidents in Puerto Rico’s waters are extremely rare, and serious injuries are even rarer. When you enter the ocean, it’s important to remember that it’s a natural, wild environment with many types of marine life, including sharks. Although the chances of a shark-related injury are very low, they are still part of the ocean’s ecosystem, and the ocean should be approached with respect. By learning about sharks and following safety guidelines, you can minimize even this small risk.
Are surfing lessons safe?
Absolutely. While there is an inherent risk with any activity, all of our instructors are certified in CPR and first aid, and there is always an American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard present when students are in the water. Additionally, emergency lifesaving equipment is always on stand-by at the beach.
What happens if the waves are big?
Your safety comes first, and La Pared is one of the safest surf spots on the island due to the fact that the waves form and break on a sandy beach (unlike other surfing venues where there are reefs and rocks). A beach breaking wave offers lots of options for every skill level. During our operation, we’ll always find a safe place for beginners!
What are some safety tips for surfing in Puerto Rico?
- Respect the Ocean: Please know your skill level and avoid areas with strong currents and big waves if you are a beginner! There are often rip currents at this beach, please be aware of them if you choose to swim before or after your lesson.
- Understand the Local Breaks: Every surf spot is unique with waves breaking in different ways, potential hazards that are hidden from view (coral and rocks), and local surfing etiquette.
- Surf with a Buddy: It is always safer to have a friend to look after each other and assist in emergencies.
- Stay Hydrated and Use Sunscreen: Please use reef-safe sunscreen that won’t damage the fragile ecosystems around Hawaii.
- Avoid Surfing during Hurricane Swells
I have no surfing experience. Can I take lessons from your school?
Yes! We teach all ages and levels. We’re all about getting beginners out on the waves!
Cancellation Policy
We have a 48 hour cancellation policy. Cancellations made 48 hours prior to scheduled lesson will receive a full refund. Cancellations made between 48 and 24 hours prior to scheduled lesson will receive a 50% charge. Guests that are no-shows, late arrivals, or cancellations made less than 24 hours will receive full charge.
Due to the unique nature and small size of our groups, we are forced to remain quite firm about our cancellation policy. Consider that on a given day you have a lesson with us, we are there, onsite, waiting and ready to serve you. Regardless of the cancellation reason, our time and fixed costs are already invested; we may even have turned down other customers by holding your space. Thus it is easy to see why we must remain so firm regarding our cancellation policy.
WEATHER RELATED CANCELLATIONS
If we need to cancel a lesson due to weather you will not be charged. With that being said, we make all determinations about weather cancellations so please do not make the mistake of deciding not to arrive to your lesson because you think the weather might not be acceptable as you will be charged if the lesson goes out.
If we need to cancel a lesson due to weather conditions we will call to notify you as soon as possible, however please note that due to the sometimes unpredictable weather in the Caribbean, cancellations may be done the same day on site.
